How Do People Feel about Face Masks?

Ask a Question

As you all have probably heard, face masks must be worn on public transport on June the 15th. How do people feel about this? And do you think face masks offer a lot of protection?

I think on public transport the open windows can help more. Unfortunately on some planes and buses u can not do that. The mask reduce the chance to get the virus to 25% if u wear it. If the others do it it reduces the infection rate more.

I will try to avoid public transport till we have the vaccine. Honesty I think if someone with Covid get there...mask, no mask will not matter.

Also the government rapidly reduces the lock down measures, when the real numbers are high. Unreported deaths etc...I think it is too early for public transport in London to have so many people travelling to work.

AgnesFaludi yes that is true. I’m quite scared at the thought of having to get on a tube and train again so it is something that is so scary right now! My shop is reopening next week and I am going to try and walk. I’d rather that than get on a tube right now

I wonder what the taxi situation currently is. I just saw a lady and child climb into a taxi outside my house. Neither they nor the driver were wearing a mask and you cannot practise social distancing in a cab.

Lynibis I think it will be compulsory to wear them in a minicab too from Monday. I know a lot of drivers are supposed to be putting the shields in place so hopefully that makes it safer

Ann1984 hopefully they will be made slightly safer with the shielding but still scary right now

It is all very strange and confusing because if you cannot practise social distancing surely they shouldn't be working? I was under the impression you have to stay 2 metres away from everyone even outside, let alone in a confined space like a car.

Taxis running like usual here. No masks.

We've got a very low infection rate here atm, but if we get a second spike, we're right in the poo because not a lot of people have had exposure.

We're out of a main town (but the village is getting bigger by the hour) and a lot of the people there are not taking a blind bit of notice.

How am I stressed?

For example .........

My parents are mid 70s and should be indoors, but between them, they are going shopping 3-4 times a week. And also walk to go to get a paper from the centre of town every day.

They think that because they're very fit for their age, they won't get Covid, or if they do, they will be ok. It's worrying my sister and me sick.

TheChimp that is very worrying. I know my father in law is in his 70s and does exactly the same. I hope we can avoid a second spike and hopefully we can say goodbye to this awful virus as soon as possible. I hope you are all ok and I know it’s a very stressful situation right

I am sure it is. Trouble is the damn virus affects everyone differently, think Boris and Kate Garroway 's husband. Many of those who have died have been well under 70 so it is a bit of a gamble, maybe one they are willing to take having discussed it together. My town was on news as worst in county being a seaside place too, I am staying in for the foreseeable!

Lynibis I agree. Me and my son both have asthma so I’m terrified of it. I’ve seen on the news so many people flocking to the seaside. I live near a common and people have been meeting in groups of ten plus for a long time!

TheChimp They know best at that age. I hounded my Mum over it right at the start and she actually listened although possibly wouldn't admit that.

Yes they do offer protection (scientifically proven) and wearing a mask not only protects you but others, I don't personally understand people's objections to wearing one. I would be happy to wear one and would be more comfortable if they were compulsory in busy public spaces such as on public transport.

Nope it doesn't protect the wearer at all unless you are wearing the whole clinical kit and caboodle . In fact they can be dangerous to the wearer as the wearer will be constantly putting hand to face to adjust said mask thus spreading any particles of virus around their hands, face, adjacent surfaces etc .

I really did hope (obviously in vain ) that all people would have listened and learnt that by now !

What a face covering does is protect everyone else from from the wearers coughs , sneezes etc . So a good thing as it will protect others from the wearers exhalations but please don't labour under the illusion that wearing a face covering will protect yourself .

Please educate yourselves from information freely available

I’m fine with it. I don’t believe them to be the answer to the way out of it, as people need to still maintain good hygiene practices. But if a mask stops someone touching their face, then that’s helpful. I’m just wary about the extra rubbish that’s going to be flying around the system

hspexy that’s true. I have seen so many face masks just thrown on the floor which is not good at all. I don’t get why it’s so hard for people to find a bin!

sarahc1427 sometimes when it’s windy out, I think that perhaps the wind blew the rubbish out of the bins...but then I am often reminded that people can be disgusting

sarahc1427 Unfortunately most bins have been removed from populated public places (stations ,bus termini etc ) due to terrorism . A favourite place to leave bombs .

Obviously not an excuse to throw them on the floor and I would hope that most respectful folks wouldn't .

I have no problem with them, plus its help me with obsessive face touching. What I dont get is people wearing gloves to do their shopping and then touching their phone, car keys ect then taking the gloves off.

I think they do offer a certain amount of protection but it saddens me to see non-reusable facemasks littering the streets!
