People round for Dinner?

Other

When I was young it was normal to have friends and neighbours round for dinner every so often and it was reciprocal. I still enjoy having people round for a meal but nowadays am very rarely invited to anyone else's home for a meal. (Apart from close family)

I am hospitable and I would say half the people I work with have been to my home for lunch or dinner and all have been to a yearly party i used to have, but I have not been to their homes. I am not an exceptional cook, tasty and edible but certainly not cordon bleu!

Are people losing out on the social skills of yesteryear? My sons often have their friends round for meals so glad they have inherited my trait of loving to entertain.

I think it's just a trait of today's society, people are usually so busy coming and going and working odd hours that most people rarely have meals together even as a family now never mind have friends around for a dinner.

Yes, you are right. Back in the day not so many wives worked full time.

Me & my partner always have our friends round for dinner! Not all youth are the same 😂 although we don’t exactly cook it all.. We will set a theme for the night (Mexican, Italian, Spanish etc) and we will cook a dish & everyone else will bring another dish or drinks or pudding. Our friendship circle are at a stage in our lives where we’re all trying to save money for weddings or buying houses so it’s a cheap idea to get us all together and it’s always good fun 😊

That sounds lovely, glad to hear some people still entertain at home.

I love having people round for meals. Nothing better than a table full of people enjoying each others company. Like you I am no cordon bleu but you won't leave my table hungry! I don't always get invites back, but one young couple did once say they would invite people round but don't have a dining table or room for one and I suspect many have the same problem. My girlfriends and I get together once every two months, one does starters, host does main course, one does dessert, two buy wine and one brings flowers for the host. It's a nice way of sharing the costs and we all take our turns to host.

It is lovely to have people eating and chatting round the table. I cherish the times my sons and their families come for a meal. I have a couple of single friends i have lunch with but don't entertain much now as couples tend to feel awkward dining with a singleton.

It is lovely that Hannah enjoys get togethers with friends but I do think SOME young people lack cooking skills and confidence to cook for others.
