Most People on Universal Credit Unaware They Qualify for Free NHS Prescriptions

In the News

Universal Credit claims have rocketed since the start of the coronavirus outbreak, with one million more people still relying on the support full time

Millions of people on Universal Credit are being encouraged to check if they’re eligible for free NHS treatment.

It comes as claims for the six-in-one support have rocketed since the start of March - with one million people now claiming it as their full time income.

If you’re claiming Universal Credit, you may be entitled to free prescriptions, regardless of your age and whether you have any dependents.

Brendan Brown, at the NHSBSA, explains: "There’s an assumption that everyone claiming Universal Credit is automatically entitled to free prescriptions and dental treatment – but this is a mistaken belief. People are only entitled if their earnings are within the threshold.

"With so many people claiming Universal Credit for the first time ever, we’re here to help people understand if they are entitled to free healthcare and how to claim correctly.

*as long as people recognise that the NHS is struggling and isn‘t an endless money pit that can supply everything unnecessarily - you can buy a pack of paracetamol for 25p but a prescription of paracetamol costs the NHS around £8 - please be sensible people 🤦🏻‍♀️

Not everyone on universal credit is entitled to free prescription. You need to be earning under a certain amount it depends on your circumstances.
