How Do YOU Make a Perfect Cup of Tea?
Ask a Question
There has always been debates about how to achieve the perfect cuppa. A professor has stated that the first thing poured should be milk, then water followed by your teabag to ensure the correct shade of tea.
Apparently there is also the correct way to stir your tea. Seems I’ve been doing everything wrong! Wonder how I’ve managed to survive until now
What about you? How do you make a cup of tea?
Ann1984 controversial .
I don’t think there a right answer really, just whatever suits you I suppose.
I might stick to black coffee
Ann1984 snap! This to me has always been the correct way for many reasons. The water should be boiling so if milk is already in it reduces the temperature.
Then, as neo1 says, the tea is unable to infuse properly if milk is clogging the teabag. Also it is easier to see how much milk you need if the tea is brewed first.
If making tea extra properly in a teapot then I would put the milk in the cup before pouring the tea, but of course you are not brewing the tea in the milk when doing that.
Always the milk last otherwise it will congeal in the holes of the teabag and you wont get the full flavour of the tea. Im a strong builders tea drinker, non of this tea flavoured milk rubbish for me
Teabag, water, a dash of milk. I like a strong brew. I do agree a teapot is the best & proper way for a decent brew even tho I rarely bother with a teapot.
You can go a little overboard with this. For example, you shouldn't reboil water when making a cup of tea, as 'boiling water more than once removes oxygen and nitrogen [which] leads to a dull flavoured cup of tea'. Plus, the recommended water temperature or brewing time can differ for the various tea varieties. I once went to a specialist green tea cafe and the tea I ordered came with an egg timer to let me know when the optimum drinking temperature had been reached.

Follow what the Queen does:
- Pour the tea into the cup from a teapot
- Add milk to the cup after the tea, never before
- Stir back and forth - never use a circular motion and never touch the sides
- Sip from the cup, do not slurp!
Oh, and if you are popping in for a cuppa with Her Majesty, and she asks you to pour, don't forget:
- If leaf tea is served, a tea strainer is used.
- The tea is handed out one cup at a time after being poured, rather than pouring a few and handing them out in one go.
- The milk jug and sugar is passed around and each person adds their own.
- Use the teaspoon to stir the tea (without clinking) and then place it back on the saucer.
- Cups are held by the handle – being careful not to raise the little finger – and placed back on the saucer between sips.
- Saucers remain on the table and are never raised when the cup is lifted up.
- Away from the table, for example in an armchair, the cup and saucer are raised together and then put down between sips.
Alternatively, if she is coming to your place, she likes Assam or Earl Grey!

For decades it was always milk then pour ....unless using a tea bag ... now it's definitely pour and then milk.
I don't think there is a right or wrong way anymore everyone likes it to their own method and taste. What another will swear by as being the best and correct way to make a cuppa may not be the liking of another.
I agree there is no right or wrong way of making the perfect tea, I prefer coffee...oh , perhaps people have ways of making the perfect coffee. Who knows this may open a can of .
I like my tea very strong, so the bag goes in, hot water over it, and milk after that...and the bag stays in
I drink green and lemon tea so bag goes in, add hot water and then wait and remove teabag. I can drink it any strength which is great when I visit people as I take my own, when they make it they can’t go wrong.
eyeballkerry sounds nice. I do like a herbal tea. Don’t like it when people put milk in a herbal tea though
HappyTravels i put a small drop of milk in green tea but my brother says its wrong on all levels
By letting the person drinking it make it coz I don’t and non tea drinkers shouldn’t ever make tea...
Tea bag Water and let stand for to mins then add milk i like a strong milky tea no sugar though cant stand the stuff in tea
