Philip Schofield Comes out as Gay

In the News

Philip Schofield who has been married 27 years this year and has two daughters has come out as gay. I honestly don't mind either way, but pleased that he has had the love and support of everyone close to him to announce his true self and feelings. Is it really news worthy though? Are people going to stop liking him down to his sexual preferences? Strange world we live in where we claim to be liberal but then this makes headline news

What do you think of this?

Well if it is true I feel sorry for his family as he has lived a lie and ruined any chance his wife had for a marriage with a man who was attracted to her rather than other men. Yes, each to their own but there is no need for this deceit in this day and age.

Lynibis he explained all of that in his open letter to the public on Instagram, I don't think he openly deceived his wife, after all they've had 2 children together and are soul mates. She has accepted it and as she is the most important person involved then surely we should take her lead and accept it and be happy for all of them

I must admit that your post was the first I had heard of this so do not know the whole story. My problem is that I have never liked PS even when I thought him to be straight so if I still don't like him it obviously has nothing to do with him being gay. I still think we will not know his wife's inner most thoughts and unless she has always known........well? Be who you are, don't pretend.

I think he handled himself very well and tbh I thought the announcement was a health issue so I think there will be a tremendous amount of fans in the UK very relieved that he is only gay. His wife has known for a very long time and if she can cope with the situation that's all that matters.

angemski totally agree, Steph and the girls are the ones that matter. Just a shame in this day and age that it is still thought of as news. I haven't seen This Morning but seen the Instagram stories.

Dilligaf I am home today and I watched it live - it was handled in a very kind and honest way. He has been in a very dark place for quite some time and he felt, that in their programme, they listen to everyone else's problems and think 'aren't they brave to be sharing' so he felt it was time to be brave himself. His girls were the only ones who were told more recently and they have been totally supportive. (how recent - we don't know) It certainly explains his amazing brother/sister relationship with Holly.

angemski I will watch it when I get home. I think we would all love a friend like Holly, lovely lady. So glad he has lifted a weight before it dragged him down. Lovely to see the support online for him. He obviously brought his girls up well for them to not be anything but supportive

dholly39 this happens a lot in families, it's just they're not famous, a lot of families still carry on the same as they always have. A marriage is based on friendship, that doesn't change

His family and close friends are still loving..caring and supporting him...including his wife...who is his best friend in the world.

I'm ecstatic for him ..keeping all that beautiful gayness inside himself ...now he can openly share it and be himself.

Only people that wont be happy are homophobic haters.....and he will rise way above them.

Such lovely words ellenmcmurchie I have just watched the clip from This Morning (glad I am on my own at work today) and really felt for him. It must have been eating him up inside for years and I am happy he has a great support network including his wife throughout this, people have ended their lives in similar situations, this has been handled with dignity I think

I'm more shocked that this is news then him being gay. I feel for his wife but it sounds like shes known for a while & this hasn't come out of the blue for her & she is being supportive. Cant have been easy for her but I cant understand why someone coming out as gay is so sensationlized.

I don't understand why this is still news. I'm glad that he has felt that he has the love and support to tell people who he really is and his wife is supporting him, but I just don't get why people coming out as gay is still a big thing.

MrsCraig exactly. I hope to live long enough to be in a world where we don't have to come out as it's nothing unusual, we should have got to that point by now, a fifth of the way through the 21st century

I saw this on the daily mail, then found the video on youtube from this morning. My mum's face was a picture. Really it wasn't that big of a surprise - he used to present kids tv and did musical theatre. I wonder when his wife knew and how accepting she really is? In 2020, would it be accepted to say 'to be honest, I'm angry about it'. When someone comes out now we all have to applaud and say well done but after 27 years of marriage.... And by making it public, we all do get to have a say in it. I wonder if he was about to be outed. I wonder if he has a younger boyfriend lurking and was about to get busted for it.

I do feel sorry for his wife after 27 years but more and more older people are coming out as gay now that it seems more accepted. Years ago people just shut up and got married because that was the thing to do and gay people werent exactly welcomed with open arms.

KirsteyJames his wife probably knew before he did. It wasn't accepted when he was younger especially as people had just learned about HIV and there was so much hatred around, it probably suppressed his thoughts. Such a shame that anyone feels they have to hide who they are.

KirsteyJames It does sound as though she has known for some time. Perhaps what they had romantically gradually changed into a a friendship? Whatever the circumstances they certainly work well together in a genuine relationship on the 'best deals/toys/christmas prezzies' on in December. An old time saying used to be 'it'll be tomorrow's chip paper' and I seriously hope that it's been declared and that's the end of it.

In this day and age no one will bother what he wants to be it’s completely up to him! It was handled well on how he came out though especially with his family

Fair enough, but why in this day and age do celebrities feel like they need to broadcast it?

It's 2020, it doesn't at all matter what sexuality you are anymore.

I admire his courage to declare this publicly. i only hope for his wife and children’s sake the press don’t pick on them.

I think its sad when someone's sexual preference rather than the fact he has remained happily married for 27yrs is the thing we find news worthy. Yes I think its a shame that he has kept quite for as long as he has but he obviously had his reasons and if is wife and girls support him then thats all that matters. This however does not need to be News in 2020

After stewing for a couple of days I still feel obliged to defend myself for the very unkind nasty comment reply to my first one. You can all see it, I can't as I have muted the person. I did say this on another thread someone posted but the topic seems to have disappeared.

My boss is a dear friend. He is gay. We have dined together, gone to opera and cinema and even a weekend away to Switzerland. I saw him the day this happened and first thing he said was 'what do you think of this PS business'? Before I could answer he added 'it's his wife I feel sorry for as it must be humiliating to know your husband is attracted to other men rather than you'

I agreed, we spoke about it some more and then moved on. Just as I will now I have that off my chest. Chat has recently become an unfriendly place to be and I urge everyone....if you can't comment without being hurtful or unkind then don't comment at all. 20 points is not worth ruining someone's day.🤗

Dilligaf it wasn't you my dear, I can take criticism but downright nastiness is unacceptable and I do not wish this site to degenerate to trolling. If it were you I would not have been able to read your comment, but I have blocked the person in question who was following me around the site making comments on my comments. Unless the comments have been removed I am sure you can see the nasty comment. I have never found your comments to be so.

angemski thanks for putting me in the picture. I can't help feeling sorry for the person as she must be very bitter and possibly have no love in her life. I just cannot understand those who think being nasty to others is a good way to vent your own unhappiness. But, the world is a strange place and daily I despair of the hatred and violence. Seems we have learned nothing in all the millennia.
