Do You like Poinsettia ?

Ask a Question

I like poinsettia it shouts Christmas to me, however my husband doesn't like the plant as he think it's old fashion and reminds him of his gran's house. What are your feelings and can you recommend an alternative festive plant ?

Does cold tea work? I'll have to try it as I have no luck with poinsettias and it's a Christmas miracle if they even make it to Christmas

I can remember as a kid often being told to pour the tea dregs over plants. That's when tea was made in a teapot!

Ann1984 no one to make tea for now but used to use tea leaves, half normal everyday tea, the other earl grey, delicious, especially with a cream tea!

While considered by the ancient Aztecs to be symbols of purity, in today's language of flowers, red, white or pink poinsettias, the December birth flower, symbolize good cheer and success and are said to bring wishes of mirth and celebration.

I love poinsettia, as they are a symbol of Christmas. How about a Christmas rose or an amaryllis if your husband doesn’t like them?

And so my Annual battle to keep my Christmas Poinsettias alive continues.

We had 2 this year, the more traditional red and a rather stunning looking white variety.

Both looked lustrous and hearty over Christmas, but now it's like they know the seasonal festivities are over and they've given up.

I think I'm going to put one in the heated greenhouse, and one near a radiator, and see what happens.

blacklabrador oh my goodness every year my neighbour buys me one (she did it for her grandma so maybe that's how she sees me lol!) but every year it's on it's way out by the big day. I would feel really bad if she was one of those neighbours who often popped in, she would wonder where it was. I heard that it grows like mad in Mexico and is considered a weed!

Lynibis I think if she did pop in she'd not be too surprised at the lack of Poinsettia, I don't know anyone who can keep them going.

With the lack of a Mexican climate here in Essex maybe a shot of tequila might perk mine up - I'll try anything at this stage πŸ˜†

I think they look really festive. I’ve just spent New Year period abroad and the Spanish have them everywhere, there’s even White ones, they all look very pretty.

Christmas Catcus are also nice, I have a few of those, they always seem to flowering and I manage to keep it alive πŸ˜‚

I have an artificial one kept in my lounge all year. It was given to me as a Christmas present and it looks real from a distance.

You have to have one at Christmas. Your husband should cherish memories of family they are not in our lives forever!

They're nice enough but a little over rated in my book.Quite temperamental as well. They sometimes last for months and other times die off in a few weeks.

I do like them but they are very short lived, I much prefer something else such as a Christmas cactus, very pretty when in bloom and they will go for years

I put up the plastic ones on big xmas πŸŽ„ tree but last December I decorated the piano 🎹 and the tv πŸ“Ί stand with them making living room more Christmassy!! πŸ€β€οΈβ„οΈ

And we once bought a real one and placed that in dining room table it was very nice 😊🌺

Nice πŸ‘ŒπŸ» question! I would like to know which other flower 🌸 or plant 🌱 that is festive too!

Mother in Law always has one, lasts about 4 weeks, until this year and they'd sold out by the time I returned from holiday. She wasn't impressed with the alternative - a photo of one growing naturally in Tenerife. Image

I regard the plant the same way as cut flowers, I know it's going to die soon, just enjoy its company while it lasts. My house is like a plant hospice, they just come to stay for a few weeks and then move on....
