Is there anything you remember you parents doing chores you no longer do?
Ask a Question
When I was a kid, every Sunday evening, my Step Dad used to polish all our shoes. He used to get a good shine on them, a left over from his National Service days.
I can't remember the last time, I did more than give them a quick wipe over or when I last bought shoe polish. Could be because I no longer buy leather shoes.
My Mum used to iron everything including tea towels, since I've been working from home I rarely iron anything. I used to spend 2-3 hours a week ironing, but have come to the conclusion life is just too short, so I try to buy clothes that don't need ironing.
Can you think of any chores your parents did that you dont?
My answer is the same as it was when you asked exactly the same question about a year ago: www.latestdeals.co.uk/chat/polish-shoes
You have a better memory than me, I will remove the topic, it's coming up to people's birthday so I am thinking about them more
beccatavender Your memory is perhaps better than you think it is - you used exactly the same wording (for topic)
It is now apparently OK to repeat a topic if there has been no action on a previous one for three months. So no harm done
I do, not as much as should. It always reminds me of my dad when I do it, I think the smell triggers my memory.
It's surprising how smell can trigger a memory, my Mother in Law used to use Dove, I can't smell it without thinking of her, and even though she has been gone for 10+ years it still upsets me.
I have a lot of younger siblings , when babies being bathed , my mum used to plaster them in Cuticura Talc . I can’t use it it at all .
I don't know if this was classed as a chore but my mother used to bath us in the kitchen sink every Sunday evening, whether we needed it or not
I remember the Sunday night bath, then then watching TV together as a family, we only had a coal fire, so the living room was the only room with heating. Hot water bottles as the bedrooms were so cold
beccatavender The coal fire was the business, I do miss that, we were toffs back then, hot water bottles and a couple of jackets on the bed, like the Billy Connolly joke.
I loved the coal fire, but my Mum was always worried that we would get too close, and our nightie , flanelett for warmth, would catch fire or we would get chilblains pato
Mick82 Mollycoddled to the extreme, most of them have never heard of things like hand me doons, yesterday's soup, burning old shoes in the fire or getting your leg stuck down the sleeve of the eiderdown, they don't know how lucky the are, and that's just my generation, the generation before them were sh!tting in a cupboard in a close
beccatavender My mother always had the coal fire on, we used to have a massive fire guard on ours when we were younger, but when we got a bit older she took it away and replaced it with a smaller one, we would sit one on either side of the hearth and watch the telly, that was once my mothers pal had left, she was in our house every day and she always hogged the fire with her ass almost on the flames.
People used to scrub front doorsteps and keep the area outside front door clean and tidy, don't see it these days just 'well, it's the council's job innit?'
The last time I saw anyone washing outside their front door, the were using zan izal, I think she might've been nose blind
My mum ironed a lot more than I do pj bedding table cloths I do pants tops occasionally a dress mainly uniform
My mum had the ironing board up every Sunday while Stars on Sunday was on with Jess Yates.
MelissaLee1963 my mum always ironed on Sunday. I do little bits throughout week
Funny,my Mum used to iron on a Sunday and when I had to iron school uniforms and my husband's shirts, before he retired, I followed suit, both my sisters iron on a Sunday @Imnotcheap
beccatavender I'm ironing now trying unsuccessfully to not wait for messages
Someone in my sons class has covid if he been in close contact NHS will message me but I have no idea how long that would take. They might have made all appropriate messages by now or not
Fingers cross you don't have to isolate, my sister who lives in Wales says Covid is rife in her daughter's class, about half the class we have been effected Imnotcheap
My dad always polishing his boots and I get him to do my daughter school shoes and I only iron my daughter's uniform lol
My Mum used to put newspaper down on the kitchen table and I had to gather all the brass ornaments and clean them every so often, it was always a Friday evening job. Mum also used to iron absolutely everything, that's something I hardly do these days as there's no need.
