Portable AC Unit for Hot Summers?

Ask a Question

Does anyone use or recommend using a portable AC unit at home?

It’s not even summer yet and there have been a few really hot days and evenings.

Do you rate AC units better than simple fans? My logic is that perhaps a simple fan swirls warm air around but the AC unit truly cools the air making for a more comfortable night’s sleep.

I bought one about 5 years ago because the dogs were not enjoying the heat.

We had it in the bedroom, so they could get a nice, restful nights sleep.

the only issue we found was that they are noisy, and the sounds changes depending on whether the room has cooled to the required temperature.

You'll also need to have a large hose sticking out of a window or door, to pump the hot air away.

Yep we have one and agree with what blacklabrador said. The only other point is the running cost , ours averages about 38p per hour which doesn't appear bad but use it 10 hours a day over 7 Days and it's £26.60 per week or over £100 per month , course we don't use it solid for a month not in the UK anyway but just gives you an idea of how expensive they can work out

blacklabrador didn't realise you still needed to vent it but I suppose it makes sense. Still weighing up whether it's worth it. I wonder if we're in for a good summer this year??

Mango4 that's really helpful, thank you. When you put it like that, it soon adds up. Mind you, a good nights sleep is priceless.

HappyTravels I like my fan in my face. For woman’s moment too! Ooft. If anyone else complained at home I’d also get a oscillating fan for each room as ac serves one room to an extent as far I know.

HappyTravels Trouble is, by the time we realise it's going to be a scorcher they sell out like hot cakes.

I bought this as my house as soo hot was like a sauna, it was about £15 on good old amazon on an offer it a Deawoo one. I dont think it's acctualy air con but it does blow out cold air rather than circulating air if that makes sense. I found it very good. It's onyl small too but I see you can get taller ones maybe better for bigger rooms. I used this is my bed room. Didn't realised I had it so long I still use it every year Image

MelanieMason they are good. Mine just broke. But when it gets real hot you defiantly need air con. It’s just that it never normally stays hot enough each day for us to install in properly in our homes here.

Next best thing if you can afford it is to buy a portable air con unit. That’s what I did a few years back.

rossruby1977 yeah agree air con would be great, I live on the south west coast but I love the hot summer so can manage with a fan like this it's just night time I cant 😰 I'd defo say air con would be quieter than the one I have

MelanieMason I’m on the coast to, my unit isn’t exactly quiet, I’ve you spend more you probably get a quieter one. I found putting it on for half hour helps loads. Then placing it on again later. All depends on how hot it gets. At night I would get it cold so you can drop off. Mine has a remote control so you could switch it on again at night. But it’s not quiet.

That’s when you need to spend a lot and get a permanent one.

Depends on your budget.

MelanieMason the limitations of using the LD app.....I’m trying to zoom in on your attachment 🤦‍♀️🤣 It was another hot day today. I shouldn’t complain that the weather is lovely but the heat builds up so much during the day, it makes bedtime unbearable.

I bought an air con unit, I bring it out when it gets real hot. Works very well but only one large room. But it’s so lovely.

They start of from £300. They are portable. Some also double up as a fan & Dehumidifier.

However they can be costly to run. But you don’t need to run it all day,

Having read some of these comments (I know Mr T wants one) I can well believe that they are 'cheaper' to buy and expensive to run a bit like epson printers!

tumblespots I agree. The hidden costs are something that should be factored in.

There's a pseudo air conditioner on the market which cools air through a water based filter. They're portable and about the size of a 6" cube. Very effective when blowing air over you but wouldn't cool a room down. Runs on USB power so efficient (I suspect) as well (between £25 - £40)
