Poundland Not Just £1 Anymore

Ask a Question

They’ve been selling things at different prices for a while now, and now they’ve officially declared their newer pricing strategy will mean more 50p and £5 offers in branches nationwide

Is this a better move/fit with the current retail environment?

I think a poundshop should be stuff £1 or less i worked at poundworld before they went under and think they got greedy then look what happened i think poundland will be next especially now they've opened one below stores.

I agree. If they have things less than £1 they will keep customers happy. If their prices can range up to £5, then a lot of people will shop elsewhere

I feel like they’ve been this way for quite a while already, they’ve had the £2 and £5 ranges for years now.. all they are doing different is adding a 50p line... there’s a pound world next to poundland in my local shopping centre and they have 50p / 75p lines already, I think there’s too many poundshops at the moment...

Lot of stuff they used to sell at £1 they no longer sell because they have tight margins and the lower value of the pound means no longer profitable but I'd rather some of those items came back at £1.25 rather than disappear completely. Also the thing where they keep reducing pack sizes to hit £1 so you used to get 6 batteries for a £1 and now its 5 or 4 etc. No doubt in the future it might reduce to 3 batteries but many of my devices take 4 batteries so I'd rather it went up 10p.

I get irritated with the space that £5 items are taking some of which are actually poor value compared to some other shops.

Personally I'd rather it was a everything under £2 shop.

I do have a real bugbare with this . If Poundland charges more than a pound for something then I have for many years thought they need to change there name as it just feels wrong on so many levels.

I think most people realise that Poundland is just a trading name and sells cheap stuff, most of it for £1 - its not a cast iron promise that everything is £1. I shop at Boots - but I've never bought boots there. They have been sellling at other prices for some time now. Its like anywhere else - there are some bargains to be had but something are just as cheap elsewhere - or they are slightly smaller here. You just need to be careful.

There's lots of stuff for £2 in my local Poundland these days, it's still good value so I don't mind really. They also have a clothing section at the back that has all kinds of different prices.

Poundland is a low margin high volume seller and that is the real benefit to consumers as other types of retailers rely on higher margins because of their lower turnover to make a profit. In the past I've seen items in poundland at a £1 that other retailers would charge up to £3 for which is a huge difference. I'm a big fan of poundland but like any store the value does vary, sometimes a supermarket can be cheaper or stores like Home Bargains offer better value for some items.

For me the real value stuff is items that compete with stores that put on a very high margin. Bicycle parts and tools etc. Bicycle shops operate on a very high margin for accessories.

Pound shops should sell things for a pound there is far too much in them that costs more I think that's why some went bust

You’re right, as that was their original business strategy to beat the competition. As they’ve now strayed from that, customers will find items cheaper in the discounters, or sometimes even in the supermarkets, who I believe are able to pull customers in more due to the volume they sell

Poundland's been selling items for £2 £3 and £5 for years now, I don't see why that is an issue.
