If you want to keep him occupied, think of games or toys where it takes a lot of practice to get it right, whilst still being great fun.
Things like a Wooden Labyrinth Board or a Dart Board (if he'd like to feel a bit more grown up). Keep it a secret but darts is fantastic for improving your mental arithmetic.
Young kids also like making towers out of playing cards - get two matching decks and get some construction going...
It would probably be handy for him to know a second and third language. I for example learned Spanish as a kid just by watching TV and then it grew on me.
I wish I wou!d have learned Japanese, but darn is that a tough language to handle.
