Competitions

I have seen a number of people describe thereselves as professional compers. Are there people our there who actually make a living from entering competitons?

No, I don't believe this at all. I know of Di Coke, but I think it is more of a case of being a stay at home mum and having a husband support her - same with any other 'professional compers'. The amount of wins I've had versus entries comps - there's no comparison. I certainly could not make a living as a comper and at the height of my entering I would say I easily entered 200 a week.

I wouldn't describe myself as a professional comper though it is all I do - I don't work. I can't imagine anyone making a living out of it unless they do a lot of sponsored blog posts etc. I enter competitions with a view to keeping anything I win - I don't intend to sell prizes on although I have in the past and I think most people if they're honest would say they have also. I do enter a lot on autopilot, especially when I can't sleep so I do inevitably win the odd thing I can't use.

I have seen a couple of people long ago on tv and in newspaper who reckon they earn a living from comping, one bragging 50k per year. I personally dont believe this as I enter about 200 per week and in 30 years plus have only won 2 really good prizes. It was easier to win before the digital age as I think far less people diligently entered, so less competition (forgive the pun). You had to cut out entry forms, fill by hand and then post so probably not possible to do many a day.

I personally enter anything that I know I can use, or give as a present which saves me money. I would not enter to win a holiday with surfing, bungee jumping etc at my age, I would not enter a comp for baby goods as no one in the family has any babies or are pregnant. I always feel it is a bit selfish to try and win something I don't really want when someone else may really love to win it.

I don't believe that people can make a living out of it. I enter a lot of competitions and have been lucky to win quite a few but when I compare the amount I enter to how much I have won and how much the prizes are worth, it certainly wasn't enough to make a living. I see it as a hobby to pass my time and if I win fantastic, but it is not something you can make a living from.
