Public Speaking

Ask a Question

When speaking to an audience (face to face or online) does any one have any great tips in conquering nerves?

What do you think of this?

I don't have many tips but I would love to hear some. Maybe some deep breathing beforehand?

I am not sure if there are any. I guess people would say breathing techniques, picture the audience naked etc but at end of day people have strengths and weaknesses and sometimes it is hard to overcome something you find difficult. They say public speaking is one of the things people dread the most.

I'm not comfortable with it but it's part of my job. I'm hoping in time it will get easier !

lauren4 yes practise makes perfect as they say. I had the advantage as a child of being in the school debating team and then spent 26 years as a registrar performing wedding ceremonies. Prior to covid I gave history talks to an elderly folks club so hope to do that again in the future.

The only other thing I can think of is to make sure you know your subject really well then you can be sure your audience isn't going to be inwardly critical.

Practise what you want to say. Have your words wrote down also for quick glances. Look at people which is good for engaging.

lauren4 you got this! I had to do a presentation for an interview and reading it out and staging it really helped. Knew if off by heart near the end of it lol.

Try not to focus your gaze on one section of the crowd when talking and although it's nerve racking .. the more natural you are the better

My best tip is don't ask me. I panicked when leaving an answer phone message

Rehearse rehearse rehearse. With anyone. I am absolutely terrible at public speaking and the couple times I had to do it I practiced 50 times if not more with my husband. I was still a mess on the day but when I did my presentation it seemed I looked as if I do it often.

I get really nervous and I normally have a tendency to talk faster when I am nervous, so prior to speaking I made sure I am clear in my own head of what message I want to communicate. I made a conscience effort to talk clearly and slowly. Prior to lockdown I would take extra care with my appearance to give my confidence a boostπŸ™‚

Most important thing - have something you actually WANT to say that's actually WORTH SAYING. I've been to far too many presentations where the speaker is clearly as disinterested as everyone else. If you have genuine knowledge and interest in what you are speaking about it will shine through
