Pubs up and down the Country
In the News
How many will still be open by the summer? Sad times for these hard working people.
A few hours ago it was recommended people didn't use pubs or clubs. it won't bother me, up until a few months ago I hadn't been in a drinking establishmebt for about five years. I'm still recovering from the shock of being charged £5.15 for a pint of beer. (nothing special)
The excuses that it's "London Prices" holds no water with me - for that price I expect a return rail ticket to London AND a pint of beer.
Sorry for businesses going under but not seeing a pub wont hurt me not stepped foot in one for over 10 years
Sad times indeed. Think of all those bar staff and kitchen workers doubt very much they will get any pay during the enforced closures. It’s those hard working people try to keep their families fed that I feel for.
I'm assuming those of you who haven't been to a pub in years do get out and don't live your whole social life online.
On the subject of people not being paid, it'll most likely affect freelance workers eg. entertainment more than people with contracted hours for the bigger businesses.
It'll of course be a different story for the small and especially independent businesses. Try to support them as soon as it is viable to do so.
Unfortunately it might get to where people can't get out and about if measures similar to those in other countries are implemented.
Dennab I did support them when younger, but unfortunately most pubs now are soulless places and "I've done my bit".
I do get out and don't use social media you can do other things in stead of going to a pub not everyone drinks alcohol it's bad for you anyway
Ann1984 Lots of things are bad for us including chocolate, sugar generally and this website but I'm all ears. Where do you get out to as an alternative to the pub so I can be more healthy? davidstockport you're going into the wrong pubs. The last one I visited in Stockport had a ban on swearing and only let people in when they knocked on the door. The one before that featured a fight that drew blood on NYE. Maybe venture out further but you couldn't call either of those soulless to be fair.
Dennab Another some years ago had a couple of nut cases, as customers, who invited a stranger home with them and cut his head off. Never a dull moment I'm not sure but I think the ban on swearing didn't apply to the staff and management. (If it was the Wetherspoons).
Should explain to those not familiar with Stockport, that it was a hat making town and that's where the term "Mad as a hatter" came from. The local council upheld the tradition some years ago by selling a DISCOUNT CARD that permitted pensioners to PAY MORE for a swim. I'm not a native of Stockport so tried to explain to some who bought them and tried to use them that it would be cheaper NOT to use the discount card. The same council threatened me with court action for paying my council tax in advance, Fortunately I managed to find a councillor who wasn't a native of Stockport to sort things out.
Just thought; was the one who would only let you in if you knocked on the door, near an over head bridge on a narrow street, with stone steps alongside it quite quaint inside? If it was, the land lord was a total nutter, he's dead now, he died several years after his brain which was pickled in alcohol until his body caught up, he hated customers because they drank "his beer".
davidstockport It was near the back of the station on a side road that goes up hill away from the junction.
Ann1984 There’s no requirement to drink alcohol in a pub if you don’t want to. There’s plenty of other drinks available. And some would argue that red wine drunk in moderation is actually good for you. It provides antioxidants, may promote longevity, and can help protect against heart disease and harmful inflammation, among other benefits.
Dennab That isn't the one I was thinking of - the one I did try to describe the land lord would lock the door about an hour before closing time and only his cronies could get in - after knocking.
He wouldn't let anyone in who'd previously been anywhere else, and any who got in just before his lockout. . . he'd sit muttering at (under his breath) until they left.
The one you describe. . . I've never been in any pub in that area.
Johnny There's no real harm in any alcoholic drink (in moderation) but theres no way I'd be happy sitting in a pub drinking a soft drink that was 60 times (or over) the cost of what it costs in a supermarket. That 60 isn't a typo, some pubs will charge £3 a pint for diet lemonade it is 17p for two litres (about 3 and a half pints) in Aldi.
davidstockport I don’t think of it like that because most of what you’re really paying for in any market is the space you’re in and the cost of the staff. Same story with having a £3 coffee in a coffee shop. The nicer the environment the better the value. Don’t take the coffee away, that really is poor value. Have it in the shop, use the napkin, the free water, the loo and the internet - you’re paying for it!
Johnny I'm not actually looking at it like that either - I just object to paying so much more, If they decided to make say £2 a pint profit - and the beer cost them say £1 the beer should cost £3 and the lemonade £2.07 so they make 93p more profit from someone who takes up the same space. I do know they have to charge for the service and the glass but the beer drinker after a few is more likely to break glasses then someone has to clean it up. So the beer drinker gets much more for his money,
I'm not getting into percentages to explain - my brains already hurting.
Well, I still intend to go to the pub. Infact just made arrangements today for a pub meet up on Fri so they better not close because I'm looking forward to it.
There are a few petitions setup online to help these people if you search. I'm not saying those things always help but it's worth a few seconds of your time to show some support.
Whether you actually go to pubs or not, one must have sympathy for the staff who will be temporarily laid off and may even lose their jobs as a result of this. It is frightening the impact this virus is having on people’s lives - in many ways.
My local is a right dump and the landlord is a right clown. He's rude and continuously makes fun of people behind their backs.
As far as I'm concerned, I'd be glad if he went bust and closed the pub. It could then be taken over by someone who has more respect.
He doesn't have any other employees, so no problems there.
All pubs will be closed as they are seen as mass gatherings and pub owners are now not earning enough.
We used to enjoy going to the pub for a meal but haven't been into one since March! We certainly don't feel safe enough to go into one at the moment. Covid is lurking everywhere and sadly doesn't wait for the curfew of 10pm to come out to play so that makes a nonsense of the whole curfew idea. The government need to be clear do they want us to get out and support this industry or not. We have lost so many pubs in the last 20 years and if we aren't careful this could well be the end of them all.... and become something of myth & legend and the world will become a much sadder place.
