Quite Impressed with Tesco Woosh

Other

I fancied a takeaway but the takeaway I've used for years I will no longer use. The last takeaway I had from them was appalling quality and despite being one blip over many years I just can't use them ever again. So I decided instead to use Tesco Woosh for a treat. You pay 2.99 for delivery and packing and they deliver within an hour. You don't get the full selection of Tesco goods but there are some good offers mixed in for Clubcard members and I got a lot of stuff including the treat food I wanted for the same money as a takeaway would cost me except of course I had to heat it myself but the value was far, far higher.

I'm now thinking I may not use a takeaway ever again but instead do a supermarket mini shop like this.

If I had driven to the supermarket it would have likely cost me somewhere between 1-2 pounds in petrol plus my time for going in. 2.99 doesn't seem unreasonable. I ordered about 8 items but it looks like you could have ordered over 30 items but remember the selection is more limited and some pricing is more expensive. It is a mixture of normal price stuff, special offers and some items that have inflated prices compared to normal. Nothing I ordered was over priced it was either Clubcard pricing or normal pricing.

Lots of supermarkets do this sort of service but its normally through a delivery service like just eat or deliveroo. I've looked at those and the prices of the stuff I wanted was far higher and delivery costs ended up being more. Tesco Woosh is through the Tesco site itself.

Personally I can see these services eroding normal takeaway business a lot.

Anyone done the same and replaced takeaway orders with mini supermarket shops?

What I bought below. The treat I fancied was sausages in bread with some ketchup and some chocolates afterwards. This wasn't of course eaten in one sitting unlike a takeaway. It will be sometime before all of this is consumed. I had 3 sausages and 3 slices of bread.

Thanks for letting us know, I didn’t realise you can order 30 items. I had assumed it was just a couple of items. I will certainly consider using whoosh.

Pjran I suspect the restriction is likely size and weight so maybe up to 40 small items or something and maybe only 5 large items or something like that. It's got to fit in a bag of a ebike or scooter I guess. My lot probably came to about 3-5Kg as the milk was 2Kg on its own. I would of thought there would be a limit perhaps 12Kg or something like that.

BonzoBanana Would they let me order just booze and cigarettes and deliver them for £2.99?

TheChimp I've seen gig economy riders on youtube deliver all sorts of stuff including just alcohol and cigarettes. They often have to ask for proof of age to deliver them. I've seen all sorts of stuff being delivered including a huge order of alcohol being delivered by ebike to a party. The courier was only 1 of 3 couriers delivering alcohol to the same place. The party organisers must have spent many hundreds of pounds on alcohol. I seem to remember one order of nappies, sanitary towels, paracetamol and whisky and that was going to a college or university address.

BonzoBanana I thought that there might be a restriction on alcohol and cigs for some reason.

TheChimp It wouldn't surprise me if the cigarettes had restricted quantity, those are like gold nowadays. There was a convenience store close to me that had a lot of cigarettes stolen and it quickly ran into many thousands of pounds lost. So it wouldn't surprise me it was restricted to just a couple of packets or something. Otherwise people could order 100s then someone could pounce out and steal the cigarettes from the courier before it got to the buyer etc and the buyer could fake innocence.

I’ve never used but have you noticed in their tv ads they are already sitting down devouring their meal as soon as bag is received! No indication saying you need to cook it first yourself 😅.

Never used Tesco whoosh but we've used the Morrisons delivery through Just Eat before and it was great. Arrived within half an hour and wasn't as expensive as we thought it would be. Husband and son were ill and I didn't want to go out to the shop so got a small delivery, enough to last a few days. Our Tesco doesn't do the Whoosh service, hence why I went Morrisons.

I’ve not heard of Whoosh before and sounds really handy as you say the cost of petrol (our big Tesco is the other side of the town) so the delivery fee is not a huge amount and also if you’re sick and can’t get out of the house this would be ideal.

Gromit22 Also dare I say it but its nice to be lazy and have stuff bought to you on a Friday evening etc. The weather was also absolutely awful at the time. If I'd got dressed, gone out, driven to the supermarket, picked the stuff I wanted (admittedly better range and prices) and then come back, that is probably 1-2hrs. It took me 5-10 minutes to select what I wanted on the Tesco site. 1-2hrs plus a bit of a unpleasant chore and about 2 pounds of petrol vs 2.99 for delivery. It seems great value to me for my time and great value compared to a takeaway too. I only get takeaways occasionally and this will be the same I think but I now think its a better option than takeaways and I shall probably use this once or twice a month I guess.

I haven't heard of the tesco whoosh need to look into it. I never shop online for food. I keep saying that I'm going to do it but still haven't tried £2.99 is brilliant. I don't drive, so I have to get a taxi unless my partner is with me

I assumed my order came from the main Tesco supermarket but I noticed yesterday that actually it was all from a Tesco Express store. That makes sense to me that convenience stores would deal with such smaller orders and have a more limited range of stock. Tesco Express is a quite a competitive convenience store in pricing, you still get clubcard offers and they match some prices of the main Tesco supermarkets. One Stop is owned by Tesco but their prices aren't as competitive and Tesco do a franchise system of stores which I think is Premiere which again isn't as competitive in pricing plus both those stores do small orders through Just Eat or Deliveroo etc which ramps up more costs as those delivery services need their own profit on top.

We have all the main supermarkets in Yeovil except Sainsburys and Waitrose but those two are the only supermarkets in nearby Sherborne which is about 6 miles away. However for convenience stores we are missing out on some like Sainsburys Local so no chance of a mini shop from them. I only mention that as they are a convenience store that is now matching many Aldi prices for staple items.
