Four years on from announcing that millions of its tumble dryers posed a fire risk, Whirlpool reveals a fire problem with more than 500,000 Hotpoint and Indesit washing machines
Whirlpool has announced today it is preparing to recall up to 519,000 Hotpoint and Indesit washing machines. The machines are being recalled owing to a fault with the door lock, which results in them posing a fire risk. The recall covers models manufactured between October 2014 and February 2018.
It took them long enough to recall the faulty tumble dryer. Has it really taken four years of washing machine production to find this fault? 2014 to 2018
Companies are so lax when it is the safety of the public that is at stake. They put profits above people and just don;t want to admit they have made another 'mistake'. 
Whirlpool must be regretting the day they purchased the Indesit group of companies and whoever owned the Indesit group previously must be laughing their head off. I've got a Hotpoint Condenser Tumble Dryer which I got heavily discounted due to my previous Hotpoint tumble dryer being recalled. My washing machine is Panasonic and my dishwasher and fridge/freezer are Beko so hopefully no chance of them bursting into flames. The Hotpoint tumble dryer doesn't work well. I often have to put it on twice to dry clothes, they probably designed it to run a little cooler so it doesn't burst into flames like the old model.
There is no excuse for bad management. I love your comment about the previous owners. I do wonder though, what is the point of a tumble dryer that can''t work at the correct temperature?!
tumblespots I'm only joking about the temperature, it just isn't a particularly well made tumble dryer and doesn't dry clothes as effectively as it should. The auto-sensing bit seems inaccurate and heavier loads just don't get fully dried depending on material.
Basically I'd already stopped using my previous hotpoint tumble dryer and it was at the back of the house under some plastic sheeting before it went to the dump and I'd replaced it with a better tumble dryer but then the recall happened and I was offered a new tumble dryer for either £80 or £50 instead of having my old model fixed for free so I took them up on the offer even though I was planning to dump the old tumble dryer anyway, so they collected it and dropped off my new tumble dryer. So I got the new model and my mother got my old/newer tumble dryer. I really don't rate Hotpoint or Indesit but thought a hotpoint would be ok for something as simple as a tumble dryer and it was a good price . I am incredibly wasteful and never put my washing outside on a line but throw it all into my tumble dryer everytime so tumbledryers tend to get excessive wear with me.
BonzoBanana When we recently moved we kitted out the kitchen in Hotpoint machines 
luckily the washer/dryer isn't on the list. We only picked hotpoint because we have had technical machines costing a lot more in the past but they all last the same amount of time so we went cheapish! After six months we had to have the element replaced as the machine had stopped working - it was terribly furred up (just six months!!). The water is hard round here, clearly even harder than we thought....
tumblespots Beko appliances can be great at the value end but ideally you want something like a washing machine to have a long included warranty both parts and labour. Hotpoint often give long parts warranties but the labour cost is high so no real advantage. I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't buy Hotpoint or Indesit because if an exceptional deal came my way I'd be tempted but generally would avoid nowadays. LG make brilliant washing machines both reliable and great performance, probably the sweetspot for overall quality/value.
BonzoBanana LG sounds all very well but we have had some bad experiences with LG T's and therefore would avoid buying anything from them!
tumblespots On one of the Which reliability surveys possibly last years LG came top of all brands for reliability although I would always strongly recommend buying a washing machine with a long included parts and labour warranty. Washing machines are mechanical devices and even a 88% reliability rate means 12 people in every 100 buyers will have faults to deal with.
I've never owned a LG TV but must admit I'd love a LG OLED TV as a future purchase but I'd probably buy from Richer Sounds to get the inclusive 6 year parts and labour warranty
BonzoBanana Yes, Richer Sounds are great with the extended warranty and will set it all up for you too.
There is never a good time for this fault to rear it's ugly head. The bosses should take more responsibility for the bad management.
My washing machine is one of those thats been affected 
Contacted them and was told they will send a sticker out in the post to stick on the machine to remind us not to use it but on 20 degree cycle if its essential. They will be in touch following from January when they start repairing/replacing!

Wow, that's amazing, a sticker! How useful is that in helping you to deal with your ever increasing washing pile..... 20 degrees is very poor, there are so many things that need to be cleaned at a higher temperature.
tumblespots 20 degrees is useless. Ive got a 13 year old that plays rugby 3 times a week and comes homes covered head to toe in mud Also a 2 year old that has numerous clothes changes a day and the stains on most of them are hard enough to remove notmally 
Luckily my mother only lives up the road 
KirsteyJames I think they rely on the fact that family members will help you out which is appaling - not everyone lives near to family, I certainly don't! Children do create a lot of washing - been there, done that, I don't envy you. I hope they get you sorted out ASAP.
That is super annoying I'm sure. Best of luck getting it all sorted as soon as possible. I've never thought much of Indesit products but now I feel like buying one could be extremely dangerous. Whirlpool seem to be using their USA profits to pay for all the huge losses in Europe.
