Would You Recycle More if You Made Money from It ?
Ask a Question
Just watched a tv program about what happens to our rubbish after we chuck it in the bin .The different things that happens to it and companies make money out of food waste and recycling and put it to use in a different ways is utterly amazing and seriously opens your mind .
I have always been of the opinion that somethings that are of a huge scale such as a planet issue cannot be solved locally but it can help . Would you recycle more and possibly pick up litter if you knew you would make money from it or say for example money was taken off your council tax ?
It’ll certainly help. In other countries, they have such schemes that work effectively, with people actually cleaning the streets for scraps
I recycle like mad anyway, but I certainly think we are daft not to have some form of money raising scheme for collection and recycling of waste! I'd certainly redouble my efforts and would nag the family even more than I do now!
Yeah,I definitely would.I recycle religiously anyway, but it would be nice to earn some money from it.
I'm happy to recycle, so don't need a financial incentive to do it more. Instead, I'm not happy with how recycling is done in the UK. There is no uniformity among councils on how and what can be recycled. A lot of recycling waste is just being shipped abroad and ends up being dumped. For example, https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/uk-53181948/why-is-uk-recycling-being-dumped-by-turkish-roadsides
Agreed , I thinks its utter insanity that for example my council will recycle 1 thng but then 5 miles down the road and its a different council they will then say no they dont recycle certain items . I am like you and have a real sense of loving to recycle but I just think if a person knows they will be rewarded that they would A ) correctly do recycling in the right way and B) They would do more if they knew they would be rewarded in someway even though its shouldnt take financial reward to do the right thing .
ACR exactly also not everyone knows that recycling machines doesnt pick up black lids as it doesnt count the colour..ir that not all paper can be recycled. For example shiny magazines etc.
100% agreement! We need uniformity and for folk to have trust in what happens to our waste .... It's bonkers that there are so many different schemes ... and the stories of what happens to 'my' carefully sorted waste is appalling-if true, of course.
In some countries you pay 10p deposit for the bottle when you buy a drink. Then you take it to collection station and get a receipt with amount off to use on shopping etc. I think in Norway they do it with cans aswell as bottles. That definitely reduces plastic bottles thrown everywhere. But really when people lately use single use masks/gloves etc and just dump it on the street?! What is going on in their minds?!.. My 7yr old knows not to litter. If there are no bins around you bring it home. We are all responsible for our planet and have to do our bit. I dont know if money incentives would change something... it's like picking up dogs poo.. there are fines everyone knows you have to do it and yet how often there's plenty piles of it on the pavements where kids could tread on it and quite often it's right outside someone's house... for some reason they love having a dog and also to pretend like they dont have to pick up after it...
I recycle as much as we possibly can, of there was a money incentive then it would a nice extra but it wouldn't change my recycling habits. What I would prefer would be for sustainable products to be less expensive or to get a discount on your shop for buying sustainable products.
I wouldn’t do it anymore because I actually can’t, I recycle as much as I can already but being paid for it would be a nice bonus I like the recycling promotions like “bring back 5 empty tubs and get a full one free“ like Lush does with face masks
For me payment to recycle would not make any difference, I recycle where I can anyway. More recycling points and making it easier for people to recycle would be more beneficial for me. Where I live all recycling points other than the main Council refuse station which you have to make an appointment for now , have been removed, i'm talking about the ones that used to be in supermarket car parks, council owned car parks etc , so other than our weekly or fortnightly collection from home it not the easiest thing to do. I've also just returned from a Park holidays 4 night break and not one recycling bin onsite, all plastic bottles cans etc went in general waste, no need for it in 2020. It's the councils and businesses that need to up their game with regard to recycling.
I try to recycle anything I can but not sure what can and can't be recycled but yes I think it would help another thing that would help is more bind outside with parts for recycling and non recycling
I think there should be a financial penalty for those don’t recycle - if by choice. Obviously if people are unable to or don’t have the facilities to then that is different but everyone where they can should recycle, and if they choose not to then they should be penalised!
Personally I recycle either way but I definitely think the incentive helps for some people, and it’s been successful in other countries where they have bottle return schemes
Yes, although I do as much as can already. In Australia you get money on all plastic and glass bottles in exchange for supermarket vouchers.
The schemes in other countries such as the bottle return schemes are certainly really good. Personally I'd always recycle either way but it would encourage a lot of people who perhaps wouldn't or wouldn't as much otherwise
That would seem to defeat the object and could have the opposite effect. Those receiving the dosh would be happy but those paying it may be decentivied.
This is what makes me extremely cross as I have no say in the packaging and dread to think of the waste with millions of parcels per day.
I had the same happen to me the other day. I got a bluetooth adapter and it literally came in one of those ''envelopes''. Such a shame.
That cardboard envelope was made from 100% recycled fibre and can be recycled yet again.
Over 90% of Amazon packaging can be recycled.
Although it's rather big for the contents, as it can be recycled, it really doesn't matter much.
Too small and it'll get lost in the delivery driver's van!
Our council did give you points that you could use to get things a while ago but stopped because of budget cuts. I usually donated mine to school
We shouldn't need to be incentivised to recycle, we should just recycle to help the environment but we will achieve nothing if the big companies don't have a strict recycling programme as they could do more for the environment than we could during our life time.
I don't recycle and would consider doing it, if they provided the bins for it along with the bags.
hspexy, I agree with you. Giving financial incentives would help. I think they should bring back the thing where people can collect glass bottles and get a small amount of money for taking these to a particular place instead of throwing in the bin.
