Recycling Con?
Other
Last rubbish day I was actually stood at my window when the rubbish was collected. In my area we have pink bags for tin/glass/plastic, boxes for paper and card, clear bags for textiles and the black sacks for household rubbish.
The pinks and box had already been collected but I watched as they threw the textiles in with the household black sack. I know some lorries have different sections but this one didn't and it made me wonder......why supply separate bags for textiles if they are slung in with waste. It actually made me quite angry as I have heard of this sort of thing going on previously.
Seen my local council do a similar thing when they are behind with collections, eg after holiday periods or after bad weather, assume it's just a quick fix for them to get back on track, happens in our local Household recycling centre to, if as is often the case around bank holidays , recycling containers for Cans and Plastic bottles especially are full they tell you to throw it in the general waste skips.
It seems councils need to get their fingers out and start updating the recycling system. I do sometimes wonder if recycling is all it's made out to be.
I believe recycling is important, but I'm really suspicious of recycling schemes. There are lots of reports of recycling waste ending up in landfills.
Yes, it annoys me that many of us recycle in good faith and with a genuine desire to help the environment only to find the infrastructure is not there to deal with it.
Yes it’s one of the biggest cons that councils will penalise residents for, yet they do not actually recycle the majority of the waste, usually due to ‘contamination’ (or rather it’s just simpler for them to dump it than comply with their own regulations).
I normally do most of my recycling at work as the bin men who empty our bins are hopeless! At work we have the standard paper and pLastic recycling, more recently they have introduced a crisp packet recycling bin, a fruit/veg waste bin and even a bra recycling bank!! It is great to know that you are doing your bit for society just with something so simple!
