Researching Family History
Other
I’ve been interested in researching my family history for a long time since there’s a lot of skeletons in the closet for my family. It’s made it difficult to find certain people or trace my family tree in certain directions.
I recently came across FamilySearch.org. All the information on their site is free as far as I’ve found so far. They’re a lot like other companies when it comes to looking for your family history, except they allow you to see more information for free than other companies I’ve found, so I thought I’d share it here in case anyone else is in the same boat.
I was able to finally find my Great Grandmother’s family here for example, despite them being Smiths with common first names too.
Does anyone else have any websites they like to use to research their family history?
cocolgooh I've always used Ancestry and some times a short subscription on Find my Past or Scottish People. If you have a look here you can get a free 14 day trial and then 50% reduction on fees. I've never paid full price in 10 years I've been on Ancestry. https://www.nme.com/discount-codes/ancestry.co.uk?c=8343
Thanks! I use Find My Past sometimes, but I haven’t tried Scottish People!
I’ll have to take a look at the Ancestry trials and reductions. I’ve used Ancestry before a few years ago and couldn’t seem to find some family members there, so maybe I need to give them another go now I’ve gotten more information!
cocolgooh If you have family in Cornwall most of the Parish records are on line without going through a Genealogy site, I got my ex husbands family back to early 1600's.
lilyflower Thanks for that! I do have some that moved there so that should be useful!
Yep I second Ancestry it’s got lots of records and you can find other people on there whose trees flow into yours often with pictures. I was contacted on there by someone who saw my grandmother‘s cousin in someone else’s tree about 6 years ago. He had died in America with no family so I sent flowers to the funeral and they sent me pictures of him. Very interested but also upsetting with some things you find but it’s very addictive too!
Thanks! It sounds like Ancestry might be a good one for me to try again!
It’s great when you can find other people that know your family members and can connect with them. You can find out so many things that you never knew about.
Il vouch for Ancestry too. I connected with a relative from Australia through Ancestry & learnt alot from her about a family secret.
I also found some information via Scottish people about my dads side.

Is good too if your looking for old newspaper stories or obituarys. I found & unlocked some interesting stories using that site too.
Oh thanks so much for this, I have always wanted to know more about my family but my mum and dad never talked about their grandpa even tho I always asked.
