Should Retailers Do More to Promote Healthier Food?

Other

Fewer healthy offers

When we surveyed over 2,000 people nearly a third told us they find it difficult to eat healthily, as they think healthier food is more expensive than less healthy food. And according to the respondents, the most popular way to make healthy eating easier would be increasing supermarket promotions on healthier foods.

But when we monitored promotions in the main supermarkets, using data from price-tracking website mySupermarket, we found that there were more promotions on less healthy foods than healthy foods.

Some product categories particularly stood out. For example, over the three-month period we investigated (April to June this year), we found that confectionery was overall more likely to be on promotion than fresh fruit or vegetables.

And seven in 10 soft drinks that would fall under the higher sugar band category (>8% sugar) of the government’s proposed sugar tax were also on promotion.

I think that it would be a good idea. I hardly ever see any fruit and veg on special offer whenever I go shopping, but I am constantly seeing things like chocolate, crisps and other junk foods on special offer.

In a word no. What should happen is heavy taxes on unhealthy food to support the NHS and people have the choice then to throw away money and years of their life or eat a little bit healthy.

Theres plenty of spiel every where about it people just need to do it. Unfortunately getting companies to mow everyones lawn for them will not work.

I agree. Why don’t supermarkets not have better and cheaper fruit and vegetables cost?

Disagree. They already have. 13p for a banana at Aldi. 15p for an apple. There are choices but unfortunately we live in a lazy nation who like to blame everybody but themselves.

BW07 I also buy fruits and vegetable. But I don’t see offers on them as much as junk food has. Besides with five children and four under four years old it’s impossible to look around. Saying that I’m glad for latest deal as that helps me save lots.

JohuraBegum the junk food has artificial offers on them. If you look at the prices eliminating the offers the healthy stuff does come.out at a reasonable price. Its a perception of healthy products that are made for us thats dear. Make your own meals etc and its cheap. A little bit of effort to add years onto your life to enjoy or sit feeling sorry for yourself with chocolate biscuits all day. I know what id rather do.

Ie...

1 ltr water 19p

1 ltr orange juice 69p

1 ltr coke £1 on offer 2 for £1.50

You see the offer straight away and think bargain but it isnt. Commercial con for profiteering that consumers always fall for

Like I mention I like to cook every since dayusing using fresh veg and fruits. I do see junk food has more offers than fruits and veg

BW07 That is not good enough. In most foods there is soya, gulten, sugar, table salt instead of sea salt, Sodium Benzoate, Preservatives, Refined vegetable oil e.c.t.

BW07 pesticides are used to grow the oranges and sprayed with other chemicals which does not make it healthy.

Not really. Most people know what foods are healthy, but most prefer choosing the unhealthier option. Consumers need to stop blaming others and accept they lack motivation and willpower to make healthier choices. You could buy quite a lot of fresh fruit and veg for the price of an average ready meal.

Yes. They'd rather sit for an hour infront of Jeremy Kyle instead of 10 minutes cooking a healthy meal.

There’s no need to promote healthy options, people know what’s good for them. A lot buy prepared meals for convenience and they might contain more sugar, fat and salt but it’s an easy meal for those working long hours.

No, their purpose is to make money so they promote what's profitable to them. If people eat junk food every day, that's not the supermarkets' fault.

I think they should decrease the healthy food prices if they increase the unhealthy ones.

And I mean vegetables and food should be cheaper than how it is.

if the profit margin on healthier food is less and promotions not always possible, then at least they should stop promoting the unhealthy stuff. Chocolate is not a necessity and whilst I do not agree with heavily taxing all bad food (we all like a treat) they should not make it so easily affordable and encourage folk to buy more than one bar because it is on offer.

My partner suffers from stomach problems and recently he's decided to cut wheat and gluten from his diet which has helped A LOT. However, buying gluten free stuff is bloody pricy. £1.20 for some pasta? That's a joke if you ask me. If they want people to eat more healthily or adapt their diet to what helps their body then they shouldn't charge so much for these kinds of foods. I mean, grapes are £2 in morrisons when a packet of oreos is only 50p. Its tempting to go for the cheaper option that will last longer in the cupboard.

Even the healthy options in the supermarkets have bad ingredients.
