Retirement Home? or Spend It on Endless Cruises?

Other

Someone at work (who is more or less counting down the days for her retirement) has pointed out that if the time comes when she may have to be put in a retirement home, she’d rather have that money spent on all expense paid cruises, as it’ll be a lot cheaper, all medical will be provided, and she would have a lot more fun

tbh I haven’t a clue if that is really the case, but I know both are expensive

I can see her point but people don't generally go into retirement homes until they are unable to look after themselves. Therefore cruises wouldn't be much fun if you were too infirm to get around and visit all the places and you may get superficial medical care on board but you would be taken ashore to a hospital for anything serious.

I am going to sell my house as soon as I retire, there is no way I am using any collateral in it to fund a care home place. After working hard all your life and paying in tens of thousands in tax, I would sooner enjoy the twilight years than see it all go to some home, especially when just 12 months in a home would cost the same as when I purchased my house. I might take a lesson from your colleague and go on a lifelong cruise, failing that go to prison, 3 hot meals a day, an en suite bedroom (OK a toilet in the cell, nearly the same) TV and video games, well stocked library, sounds better than some care homes

Please don’t burst her bubble as she’s living in a dream world. She would need cruise travel insurance and believe me that’s not cheap as you get older and declare all health issues. Let her retire with her dream x

I agree. She’s been waiting a long time to fulfil her dream, so it’s best to let her be. I suppose she has to spend her money, so might as well do it on cruises if that’s what she wants

If you have the money the cruise option would be the better choice. Nicer weather, mental stimulation, more exercise, the chance to visit interesting and exotic places.

Not sure what to say but if your old and you have a roof over your head already.

There is no need for retirement home, so I think enjoy yourself on a cruise, specially if you never been on one or don't go so often.

You get to relax, on your cruise as long as you can afford it then go ahead have fun...
