Ricky Gervais Says Popes Comments about Children Are Stupid

In the News

He is angry because the pope has called people selfish for not having children, saying some have pets in place of kids

I think it is peoples freedom of choice whether to bring kids into the world and there are many reasons some don't , maybe they cannot afford to, health issues, conscience about what the future holds, etc etc

I don't think pets replace children, most are company and companions for adults not replacement children

I cant say what i really want as your post would get removed sadly, but the state of the world and how its governed not just in the UK but worldwide, I see why more people will choose to have a pet rather than a child.

SilverSurfer I fully agree with you! Although the cruelty shown to animals these days, lots would leave lots of people world wide staying on their own !

I think it's a choice and people shouldn't be judged for not having children

CarolSarich my friend doesn't have any child she was called selfish by her family member so I said no I think it's selfish having children you don't want, she soon shut up don't get me wrong I know she would be a great mum because I've seen how she is with mine but motherhood is not for her or her partner

What an odd comment, surely in a world where there is already so much poverty we should focus on looking after who's already here. Then there's the environmental impact of having children and a growing population. I agree with others, there should not be judgments made against those who choose not to have children.

Yes M, as of last year there were 7.753 billion on the planet

The point where it becomes unsustainable according to scientists is 9 to 10 billion in about 2050, so only 30 years off at the present rate

telmel it's a very scary thought. I'm pretty sure I read somewhere back along that Prince William and Kate had been advised not to have anymore children because of the population crisis coming. (To set a good example) which makes the popes comment even odder.

Family has been his main topic since getting the job he’s a big believer in large families like there used to be I believe it is mainly to stop catholic schools closing. The catholic religion has took a battering with the news of child abuse and not moving with the times . You wouldn’t get a seat in my local church 10 years ago now hardly anyone attending

What would be stupid is to have children that you don't want or can't provide for.

Much I adore cats and all of God's many creatures they are not replacement children. I married an older man so mine came in as an attachment but it's for couples to decide albeit a huge blessing and a life long commitment. Image

I think that when we live in such an overpopulated world the Pope is the stupid one. When you add climate change into the equation surely it shows that the planet can't even support the number of people that are already here!

I think the popes a moron.

Why have a child you don't want, why bring more kids into an already unpleasant world.

I get called selfish and judged for not wanting/having kids, I have many reasons for this (I don't like kids, I struggle looking after myself so would be unfair on the kid etc), if later down the line I changed my mind (29 this year still don't want kids and never will) then I will adopt as plenty in the world that already need a home (my siblings kids could do with better parents for one)

Personally I prefer animals to children and have no intention of changing to suit others.

End of the day do what makes you happy not others.
