How to Get Rid of Squirrels?

We have so many of them and I'm wondering if there is any way of deterring them. I've removed all the bird feed and such but they are still around and have now taken to sitting on the window ledge and tapping the window - I kid you not.
Tried spraying water and they would move briefly and then come back again.
You don't say why you want to be rid of them. Are they causing damage? I would love to have squirrels in my garden.
They are tenacious creatures so I think it will be very difficult to deter them, especially if there is a food source nearby.
Lynibis they are digging up the garden, burying acorns/other stuff so keep getting things popping up in the grass. The do seem to have an endless food supply as they steal maize from the fields nearby (and likely storage sheds too) which they then come and eat in the garden so we are forever finding the remains of

We had five on the garden this morning.
rararachel Their eyesight isn't that great so whatever you make, as a deterrent, has to be big and striking. We stopped encouraging them when they brought their friends to the free food cafe and dug holes in the grass.
I believe you about the tapping on the window - we had one for a few years that did the same then would sit patiently until we opened the window to feed it. Under the current circumstances I realise that it may not be possible to do but:- make a large image of a cat (domestic or tiger etc) if it has very white eyes and teeth it is more effective then laminate it in an A4 sized pouch. attach it to a cane or stick and display it in a place that the squirrels normally enter. Although I am laughing as I put this down I promise you it does work! The same goes for magpies when they get territorial - make a cloth copy of the bird and hang it upside down in your garden and they won't venture in. Good luck.
Really? A house nearby have a very large breed of cat, big fluffy tail and some sort of Maine **** part breed. It comes to sit in our garden whilst the squirrels are literally steps away

Mine worked so well that friends also made some - the scarier the better!
angemski ah that may be the problem. He's a very handsome creature, clearly squirrels are well beneath him.
I need to find the biggest, scariest, evil cat then.
rararachel Failing that, get your hands on some zoo big cat poop! That'll keep the moggy away too! Yes, I mean an exaggerated effigy of a cat face - cling film it if you haven't got access to a laminator so it can withstand a few bouts of rain. Good luck.
That looks just like Sammy the bigger of the two squirrels I have in my garden. He's a big boy with a really bushy tail. Sindy is smaller and they normally run around together. They kept away when I'm working out there most of the time but they are active in the garden around 7/8am and that's when they start digging holes everywhere.
ShellyAnn yes this one loves to dig holes. He was balancing on the washing line earlier - then fell off and looked most upset with himself. Didn't stop him attempting to try again....
rararachel You can trap them https://www.shootinguk.co.uk/answers/trapping-squirrels-2490 Greys are considered vermin as they carry squirrel pox virus which is lethal to Red (protected species) squirrels, gloves should be worn when handling them. If they are a real problem contact the Council for advice.
i dont think there actually any thing you can do (sorry) in all fairness il send you my address you can send them my way, i love watching the wildlife lol
A subject close to my heart. At 1st I was happy to have Sammy and Sindy in the garden but they are digging holes in the lawn, digging up seedlings (to the point that I have to put bubble wrap over the pots every evening to stop them, digging holes in the veg bed, etc. The night before last about 80% of the pots were dug in. I am getting fed up now. The next door neighbours leave peanuts out for them. They appear to live or at least spend a lot of time in one of my pine trees. I am wondering what squirrel pie might taste like 
I may have to invest in a friendly trap but then what to do with them. As much as I don't like them I couldn't kill them. Perhaps relocate them somewhere else? With the fields of maize later in the year I suspect we will always have them as they have a good food supply.
rararachel see this is what bothers me as I don't want to hurt them. I have fields at the bottom of my garden and there's meadows a little further along. There's also a large village green. I wanted to live more in the country but I didn't expect squirrels to be digging up my plants, veg, etc. I don't where I would release them as I expect they will just come back, plus they have an easy food source as my neighbour feeds them (they have just grass, some trees, no plants, so their garden isn't being dug up).
We do have a nice mama duck that came into our garden yesterday with her little ducklings. Much better than the squirrels.
I think is should name the squirrels, perhaps I'll get attached to them and feel kinder towards them instead of calling them little sh**s, f***ing b**tards and other not so nice things. Not that they are in the least offended.
Our garden squirrels keep jumping on the wall and sometimes go on the Sky dish.
How they haven't knocked the satellite thing wonky, I don't know.
The dog goes absolutely nuts when he sees them on next door's fence outside the bedroom. Fortunately, he hasn't caught up with one yet.
I quite like them to be honest.
My neighbour used to catch them in a cage and shoot them. He also used to blow up moles.
lilyflower He was having a big problem with them digging up his garden, so he got some small explosive charges that you put on the molehill. The mole used to come up and BOOM. Not very nice, I know, but we used to hear the odd small bang every so often.
TheChimp They can cause an awful lot of damage, eat the roots without you knowing. Never used bombs, had traps.
