Ripped off in Florence? Call the Police

Didn't realise the police would ever get involved, but they did, so the cafe was fined 2000 euros for charging a tourist 25 euros for ice cream

This is like daylight robbery. It's good action was taken.

I agree. I’ve always heard how a lot of people said Italy is beautiful, but they felt very ripped off as the prices are ridiculously high. Glad the police did step in, but not sure how often they would do so

hspexy There's also quite a lot of corruption over there from what I've read. I am surprised the police did anything. Overall a good result for the tourists since the tour guide was brave enough to report the incident.

gemmaferguson70 yes I’ve heard so too, which really puts me off. It’s sad because people pay a lot of money to visit a place, and the last thing you want to have to do is be on guard all the time. Things like this can really ruin a holiday, which in turn gives a place a bad name

Yes it’s really unfair, so it’s definitely good to hear something can be done about it

Italian cafes are known to rip off tourists. I was caught and overcharged for a cup of coffee in Rome! It was outrageous the charge for one cup of coffee but not speaking Italian I duly paid up. Now I always carry a bottle of water when abroad and find a bench, not that you’re safe then either.

It’s sad to hear that you cannot thoroughly enjoy yourself when you’re away, as the last thing you want to do is have to be on guard at all times. It’s perhaps one of the reasons so many people I know never return. Such a shame

hspexy it doesn’t stop me traveling. Even though I now have to use a wheelchair with my husband pushing we prepare, well I do, to still use the train and local buses to avoid taxis. Taxis worldwide are worth avoiding even when you think you’ve agreed a price!

Pjran yes I guess most taxis want to squeeze as much out of a fare as possible. But I did find that fares in Sri Lanka, Indonesia and langkawi surprisingly reasonable, when compared to other possible modes of transport. Definitely no hesitations for me to return there. Also the places where they have Grab cabs often keep the travel costs down

hspexy in Sri Lanka we were a group of four hiring two tuk tuks and that didn’t end well. Overcharged again!

Pjran oh really? that's a shame. I guess it depends where in Sri Lanka. Where we were, the prices were very reasonable, ad we refrained from using tsk tubs as in most countries, they tend to overcharge - but the one time we did take it (as it was pouring down with rain and we didn't want to wait for the bus) he only charged us a couple of quid, which I was surprised by as he could have easily took advantage of the situation (we were in the middle of nowhere)

I think in most of the countries they will not get involved, because they have a limit on stealing and it will be more than 25 euros.

yes it's true, even in this country the retailer would have to hit a threshold before the police would be called, and that is usually around £50 or more
