So my roof has gone - a good number of what was secure slates. I have two quotes. They are THREE times as much as they where when we had some roofing done a few months ago! I'm astounded! Ruddy Cowboys!
Oh and they won't come out till it's less windy, so it's not like they are doing it now in the storms.
Oh dear I’m sorry to hear about your storm damage. Some tradesmen do take advantage but there are also honest ones. I’m sure you’ve phoned quite a few so fingers crossed that you’ll get some more quotes.
Don't you have any home insurance for repair of roof might be worth looking into if you do if you have a package that pays out in storms
Often using home insurance for roof repairs can prove more expensive - your insurance will increase for many years to follow and if you shop around for a better deal you can't get one.
Futhermore when you mention "insurance" to many builders their stetsons almost jump off in glee.
davidstockport This is exactly what we were thinking. WE didn't think that a few slates would cost so much in a storm? So, we either wait until it dies down suffer a leak or pay up. OF course we cold go insurance but... even so.
DebbieReed2020 I had realised that because of its age that although repairs to the storm damage might have been covered, my decision to totally overhaul (all slates removed, membrane fitted, etc etc) to prevent recurring problems, wouldn't be fully covered. What I didn't claim has probably already been saved on lower insurance premiums (and peace of mind). I used to be the same with motor insurance.
Even in storms, it's classed as wear and tear most of the time, 'if your roof was in good repair, it wouldn't have happened' blah blah blah, anything to stop paying out
Dilligaf That's correct - to some extent I agree with them. Most houses in my area built the same time as mine (1930s) had already had roof overhauls, even though the slates are in good condition the nails rot so don't withstand heavy winds.
Similar problem three years ago, I decided to have the full roof overhauled. Finding someone to do the job properly was quite difficult, one wanted to just replace the missing slates, less than an afternoon's work, with a quote of over a thousand pounds.
If you mention the area you're in perhaps someone might know a reliable roofer in your area - there still are some left, but they're hard to find.

I had a empty cardboard box I was going to take to the end of the garden but just appearing at my side door was enough for the wind to take it from my hands and end up at the end of garden anyway. Pretty amazing level of wind, lots of fences down or damaged unfortunately.
hope you get sorted ok and seems to be a lot of trade taking advantage of peoples bad luck which sucks when you have no control. Know it doesnt help but at least it is only some slates stay safe 
Have you had quotes for replacement or slate pinning? Pinning works out a lot cheaper, providing the slates are still there.
I actually avoid tradesmen who even suggest a lower price for cash to avoid VAT, on the principle that if they're willing to defraud HMRC what chance do I have! Those offering to write a higher estimate than they're going to charge (for insurance claims) are no better.
I sometimes wonder if people realise that if they've colluded to defraud an insurance company or avoid VAT and they're ripped off by the CRIMINALS who do it, they can hardly go to the police and complain, that's why so many rogue traders get away with it.
ive had same problem in private accom and cowboys have been 4 times at least for roof nowt is done right
