Would You Say Good Morning to a Stranger in the Street without Being Prompted?

Ask a Question

Been asked this question today. I actually do say hello to people. I think it’s all To do with the location. I’ve lived in other towns where no one wants to interact

I do, generally to older people though for some reason.

Yes, but it depends on if eye contact is made or not. If our eyes accidentally meet, and then a smile follows, the word ‘hello’ might pop out, or recently I’ve been saying ‘have a good day’ to people, though usually that happens most of all when I end up petting other people’s dogs. In heavily congested areas, like the city, I’m on autopilot and probably wouldn’t say anything to anyone, as all I want to do is get away from the crowds

Yes, I often do if they seem friendly and make eye contact. In my town it is not very friendly but when I stay with my sister in a countryfied area of Wiltshire, everyone greets you.

I love Wiltshire. Lots of beautiful towns and countryside.

I don't at all like cities.

No I’m afraid to admit I wouldn’t say hello to a stranger. surely you don’t go round the supermarket saying hello to everyone.

Same here. Once you say hello to one you then feel as if you have to say hello to every single person you come across. However, if someone was to say hello to me I would smile at them and happily say hello back.

RegularComper90 same. Where i live, if i went around saying hello they'll probably think I'm dodgy

Yeh I also give a smile as that person may be feeling low that day and it could just stop them doing something bad

Nope. I say thank-you though if someone steps to one side for me with the pram; that's just basic manners. I'll return hellos and good mornings too; just don't volunteer them!

In the street probably not however stood at the bus stop or in a cafe queue or something like that then I would and have done. I'm usually open to chatting to strangers

Some interesting replies. I think because I walk with the buggy and previously had a dog I have the opportunity to go on walks around the area. I don’t think I’d be as chatty in the town centre as there would be too many people to greet. I generally think if you happen to catch peoples eye then it’s Polite to smile or say hello. I wouldn’t have the energy to say hi to everyone lol

I tend to for older people especially elderly women because I'm quite tall and can get some worried looks so try to put them at ease if we are the only two people in the vicinity but don't when there are more people about. I guess I do it when people look a bit nervous or they are making eye contact.

Not in the street, but it's fairly common to say hello, good morning, etc to strangers if you go hiking 🚶

Depends where I am. Where I visit in the highlands everyone says good morning etc, it's not uncommon to stop for a chat. Generally not where I live but I often chat to strangers on the bus, mainly older generation

I do alot when I'm on my own but not so much when I'm pushing my friend in her wheelchair. I generally get asked if I want help getting on and off buses from strangers when I'm with her because I'm only small and look alot younger than I am

I dog Sat for a friend whilst she went on holiday, saying good morning to people was easy and welcomed, a dog is a good ice breaker. Doing the same dogless in the same village gets a different response. Maybe a dog owner doesn't look dodgy!

I had a dog and I think that’s why I know so many people in my area. And exactly why I now say hello to people in the street.
