Schools Reopening
Ask a Question
Hi everyone! I'm just wondering what you all think about schools reopening next month? Do you think it's too soon, or are you looking forward to it?
We'll see if it actually happens.
I wouldn't be surprised if the unions bring the teachers out if they're not prioritised in getting the vaccine.
I think they are prioritising themselves https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-55943120 . Great example to our kids ! Me first , don't care if I'm nicking the vaccine of the elderly and vulnerable . They should be ashamed !
Golfforall aren't they trying to get teachers vaccinated AFTER the elderly and vulnerable?
iamleo Read the link I gave . Teachers shared a code on Whatsap and booked vaccinations they were not entitled to .
Golfforall It sounds like only a very small amount of teachers did that though. A few of them doing something doesn't mean they've all done it.
iamleo Of course not - One bad apple and all that stuff . Or in this case quite a few bad apples .
All kids need to be back in school asap. It isn't just about education, but kids need to develop their social skills and protect their mental health.
On the other hand, we do need to consider protecting the vulnerable also. Perhaps we should wait until all the vulnerable have been vaccinated first, which by the looks of things shouldn't be too long now.
I have 3 kids doing homeschooling and they are all doing a full day school every week day. Its a bigger problem for those with parents who dont do anything and expect the teachers to pick up the slack when they go back school. In one of my sons year group 5 out of 59 children read anything this week
I think kids should be back at school, they are missing so so much. I don’t understand why nursery - p3, but what ever they do they are not going to please everyone ,
chelseaturpin All schools are still open for children who's parent(s) are key workers. The school nearest me has quite a number of pupils still attending.
Glitterandgold not just open for children of key workers, schools in my area are completely open for all kids. Certain areas might be open for those who are key workers though but not everywhere.
iamleo yes in Leeds, got 2 schools local to me both open and taking in kids unless parents refuse to take them into school. I know theyre not opening schools just for key workers as my cousin doesnt work due to being disabled and her children are back in school and I know a few other parents that dont work that have kids currently in school.
iamleo it might just be certain areas that are taking kids of key workers I dont know much as government dont make sense and I dont have my own kids
chelseaturpin that's strange. have they been identified as vulnerable for some reason? i thought all schools HAD to shut except for vulnerable and key workers kids.
iamleo Im not sure, i know my locals are trying to get as many kids in school as not a lot of parents of access to ipad, laptops or internet and are encouraging those that do have access stay at home and do online work
chelseaturpin that might be why then. im pretty sure kids get classed as vulnerable if they don't have access to that stuff at home.
Its a matter of degree . I read a couple of days ago that nationally 19% of pupils were still attending school to some degree and in some areas it was over 35% . I think its been comprehensively proved now that pre pubescent children rarely catch or spread the virus .
Any spreading around Primary schools comes from parents interacting with each other whilst dropping off their kids .
Golfforall that's not really true. primary school children are catching it and transmitting it, but possibly a little less than other age groups. we don't really know how many of them have caught it as a large number of cases are asymptomatic. there aren't really any adequate safety measures in place. if a child can catch a cold at school, they can probably catch coronavirus too. a number of american doctors have said that covid can cause heart damage in children too so it's not just about what's going on on the outside.
iamleo I'm just repeating what all the scientists are saying (and the data backs them up ) .
With the data showing a minute risk to young children I think they are far more at risk from missing out on education and the social development they get at school .
Golfforall yeah, i understand that education and development is important and there is a low risk to them but we don't fully understand the long term effects of covid. if it is damaging their hearts, who knows what else it is doing?
if schools were to return, i would agree with primary schools going back first as i feel it's more important for them (especially the younger kids) for their social development as you said. science has shown that teenagers transmit it more and in december they were the age group catching it the most so secondary schools going back first probably wouldn't be a good idea unless we want a fourth lockdown.
iamleo I think people need to understand the difference between between pre and post pubescent schoolchildren and how Covid affects them . I suppose from about 13 they are biologically almost adults and obvious they believe they are invulnerable (didn't we all at that age !) .
Sadly however well educated they do not have the common sense that comes with life experience . Just look at the idiotic things the Uni students get up to on a regular basis .
Kindly Grandmas , Aunts etc used to shrug it off with the expression " children will be children" . Sadly we are living in a different world these days . Just as kids were taught from an early age not to run into the road they now have to be taught to keep their distance from friends and relations .
No fun being a kid these days , but then again no fun for anyone .
Hi leo,
Personnaly i think it will be to soon no matter how fast or slow the figures are going down, Imo its not worth the risk, what by that point may have taken weeks to get figures down to a suitable rate might then take days again for the figures just to start rising again.
This is all my opinion and sorry if i offend anyone in any way.
