Scientists Explore Longevity Drugs for Dogs That Could Also Extend Human Life

In the News

The one sad thing about owning a dog is their short life span

Usually , depending on the breed and size they can live to around 11 to 12 years , some smaller breeds a bit longer

Now scientists are hoping to extend their lifespans using a small molecule called rapamycin

They are starting a trial on 580 dogs to see the effect it might have on their longevity

Not mentioned in this article but was in another is that dogs have a close relation biologically to humans, so eventually this science could be used to extend human life

Here is a snippet about their relationship with us

'The common dog, scientifically classified as Canis lupus familiaris, shares a surprising amount of genetic code with humans – approximately 84%. Note that the high percentage of shared DNA between humans and dogs does not suggest humans are 84% canine'

We share about 50% DNA with cabbages so really the 84% figure with dogs doesn't sound that impressive, makes them seem very different to me. We share the basic foundations of DNA with a huge amount of animals and plants to quite a high percentage. Cats are 90% and pigs amazingly are 98% the same DNA as human not far from chimpanzees. Makes it seem like eating bacon is cannabolism.

BonzoBanana I think some share more DNA with cabbages than they are willing to admit B , and they are in charge of the country

Sorry I love animals as I've said many of times they are messing with nature way to much

telmel I would be over the moon if it had been out when I had my dogs but fact of life is we are born to die at some point and putting off the inevitable isn't gonna make it better

Leannexxx Thats true L but if we can balance the lifespan more fairly between animals and humans we wouldn't feel such a great loss when they pass away .When you see crocodiles and turtles living hundreds of years it seems unfair one of our closest companions live less than 20 yrs

telmel it's one of them some are lucky and some are not but that's life

Leannexxx Wow with that logic we might as well all top ourselves now. Surely a few bonus years is worth having depending on what is happening on Earth I guess. Living after nuclear war is going to be absolutely horrific unless you have some sort of underground bunker stocked with lots of food. I'd rather live to 90 rather than 80 assuming I have reasonable health.

BonzoBanana lol I was having one of them days but it's the cycle of life yes I would love to live longer but when does it stop? These scientist are messing way to much with nature in all aspects of life like trying to bring back dinosaurs back

Leannexxx If they bring dinosaurs back that will certainly help reduce the human population and global warming although I remember reading that big dinosaurs required high levels of oxygen that our atmosphere no longer has so not sure what would happen perhaps they would be very slow moving asthmatic creatures who wouldn't be capable of much running or perhaps they wouldn't be able to breath at all.

The government will soon stop the scientists as it will mean paying OAPs longer 😂

Pjran or they will just increase the retirement age to 100

telmel Yes sadly I think the reality is state pensions and the retirement age will both move in the wrong direction in the coming years as a requirement with a failing economy. I'm sure they will still find the money for the final salary schemes that many people in the public sector enjoy for higher positions.

Jerseydrew Up to now they have not found any negatives J

And we could also extend our lives according to this

Will humans be able to live for 200 years?

Gil Blander believes humans theoretically may live as long as 310 years. Based on mathematical models, our longest potential lifespan is around 150 years. But, we know that genetic manipulation of model organisms increases it by up to 100%. So, humans can live up to 244 years.Apr 16, 2024

Just thinking of those with health issues and owners forcing the animals to live longer because we can

Jerseydrew I think it just needs more study J

Some creatures can already live more than 200 years with no health issues , scientists just need to study them and find out why and see if it can be adapted to other species
