The Sentinelese

News

https://www.survivalinternational.org/tribes/sentinelese

since the recent news of the death of someone who recently tried to make contact with the sentinelese, I’ve been fascinated and have been reading up on them

They obviously don’t want to connect with the rest of the world, so perhaps it’s best they’re left on their own

I think they should be left a lone. It's not fair on them. They are doing just fine on there own and the way they lead there life's. People coming on to there island they are bound to be scared. And thats why they did what they did. They don't want people on there island. So I think they should be left a lone to get on were there life. There to many people that wants to make money out of it. 🦉🦉

I completely agree. They obviously do not want to outsiders interfering with the way they live. Just because we are curious doesn’t mean we ought to violate their personal space. In some parts of the world’s, trespassers get shot, so this is no different

The strangest part if it is that the family of the guy who died, said "we forgive".

How can they forgive someone who killed their loved one?! Smh.

forgiveness is just a very Christian thing to do. And they can only make peace with the situation by moving on. Though the Christian society has called for justice, the only thing the authorities ought to do is question the fishermen that were paid to take him their. The tribe have been protected by law and there have been restrictions with regards to visiting the island for a long long time. We ought to leave them alone

hspexy you could say that tribe was lucky they killed someone and even the family forgave them. Not many would be willing to leave it at that. That goes regardless if the person/fam is Christian or not.

Just because they're hostile it doesn't excuse them from committing atrocities, in that case then wreckless drivers would have their way.

Rockman they wouldn’t have committed an ‘atrocity’ if the person didn’t trespass into their territory. It’s the same for those in other parts of the world where they warn you that trespassers would be shot. You can’t compare wreckless driving to this

It's better to forgive than live in agony with hatred deep inside their hearts. Wouldn't you want to feel peace than feel anger for life? If you forgive you're actually winning.

hspexy I agree, they were most likely terrified to see a foreign person entering their tribe. They probably felt danger so of course they felt the best action was to commit such atrocity.

deepcore indeed. Having read through the history of the islanders, it’s no wonder they fear outsiders. They’re existing without outsider interventio, so the smartest thing we can do is leave them on their own

The guy who got killed was a missionary and, however misguided, thought he was doing God's work. I imagine his parents are also very devout and hence their ability to forgive. After all the tribe do not live within the social mores of the rest of the world and have their own 'rules'.

I think it is arrogant of anyone to believe they are better able to judge the needs of a community than any higher being they may believe in. One might say they would have the benefit of medicine, education etc. but along with that comes the evils of mankind too. My only concern is that there must be a lot of inbreeding going on.

I agree they should be left alone on their tiny piece of land even though no one else can do so these days, the world, rightly or wrongly seems to belong to governments who can do as they wish with it.

I agree. They’ve existed a long time without contact with the modern world, so why do we need the feel to move them along to be like us? Some people think they have good intentions, but invading someone else’s personal space to preach is not acceptable. I often see religious preachers on the high street and by the station, and if they tried stop me from where I needed to go to listen to something I didn’t care about, I wouldn't be happy (and I certainly don’t listen to those who knock on my door!)

hspexy If America wanted a reason to invade that island, now they have one.

Rockman there’s never a reason to invade another country. If the US try to do so, I‘m sure it won’t be taken lightly, as I’d consider it an act of war. There’s so many other things going on in the world, I couldn’t see why they’d have much interest in an island that doesn’t have anything of value to them, aside from just the ego boost to show off that they’d punished the heathens

It probably was. There’s documented evidence of cannibalism, but no different from other tribes that still exist. If outsiders descide to enter forbidden or restricted territory, it’s likely they won’t return alive

We should leave them in peace, it's always the explorers who invade and destroy native populations as has occurred in history. They also hardly get sick because they're not exposed to viruses and bacteria that foreign people could introduce to their land.

That's not really a fact considering very little is known about them.

There's definitely a lot of inbreeding going on.

Rockman Weren't the first humans inbred anyway.

It's obvious there would be inbreeding since they are living in isolation.

There was a story of tribe members who died because a white man came to explore and inadvertently infected them with a virus which they were not immune to.

Rockman

What are you implying this time again, mate?

Since they are living in isolation, how else are they going to reproduce? They have no choice but to keep it within the family. If they don't, their tribe will cease to exist.

Also I didn't bring up this topic of inbreeding anyhow. I was more interested in western diseases potentially affecting this tribe.

Rockman Nah, he's not saying he condones it. He's just saying they have no choice...Just think about it if you were in their position.

Entering their tribe is like me entering someone's farm. Just leave them alone!!! They've been living peacefully for years how would you feel if someone turned up at your place uninvited and decided to "research" you?

Indeed. The history of outsiders having entered their territory hasn’t always turned out to be good for them, so they’re simply doing what I would say is best for their community
