Why Do People Shame Those With An Illness?

Ask a Question

I recently created a post about being dyslexic and almost everyone complained about the mistreates because in their dyslexia issues, that make me to think why people have to judge and shame others without even knowing them? When it's going to stop?

Many people don't go for their mental health treatments because they are scared to be called a mad person for the rest of their lives. Al tough many issues are just temporary and go by time or treatment.

Judging is already bad on top of that comes bullying, I know one girl who had issues and she used to cut herself, her own mother still bring that whenever they argue, although, girl is fine now but shaming is still there for her πŸ˜”πŸ˜£

Just one of those things, it won't stop.

I've had to put up with it for most of my life, even from family.

Unfortunately, you just have to get used to it.

Some people are afraid of difference or things they don’t understand. It makes them feel better about themselves to put other people down. Yet 10% of the U.K. population are diagnosed with dyslexia and there will be many more undiagnosed. Please just try to ignore these ignorant and thoughtless people.

Some parents even get mad at you if you try to explain them their children need a little extra help and that's just crazy.

It's never going to stop. My last employer wasn't happy with me being epileptic (was working in retail) and didn't particularly like me anyway and thought it was a good idea to put a flashing Santa right in front of me whilst I was working on the tills. ( right before xmas)

I've had a few people tell me their children are autistic, it personally doesn't bother me what a child is as long are their well looked after and happy.

It's a rather broad statement because for everyone who complains or is judgemental there are thousands that aren't.

The world is made up of good/bad in every aspect. Why do some people abuse, steal, murder, rape, create wars to subjugate whole countries, damn anyone who is different? As everyone on here says, it will never end, not without ending free speech.

I think maybe this should have been a continuation of your previous topic rather than a new one.

WindowShopper there is no need to be rude, I was actually agreeing with your opinion. The only reason I mention adding to previous topic is that someone may report your topic as a duplicate and it will then be deleted. It is in the guidelines.

I think social media has made this a whole lot worse because people who wouldn’t say something to your face feel able to say it online. We have always known that bullies are cowards. Unfortunately they are the ones who we notice, but they are very much in the minority.

You're quite right Grannyclock I'd like to add that many are so cowardly they'll join forces, just as in real life they think supporting each other against those who challenge any of their group, even when their cronies are obviously wrong makes them stronger (They can't even fight their own battles). They then wonder why no one really likes them (even their own family and partners) and they have no real friends and often no jobs.

Many members of bullying cliques are so stupid they don't even realise they're being bullied by the ringleader of their clique (or too cowardly to stand up to him/her),

I'd also like to add that most bullies (especially online ones) are usually total inadequates, envious of anyone who isn't.

I'm not gonna turn this political but if something is wrong with you healthwise people have been conditioned to think any illness or health problem they are living with is either in the heads or you faking it to get benefits . If it cannot be seen then it does not exist in some peoples eyes and they refuse to see the medication you might take , the hospital appointments you have , the inconvenience of the health problems to you or your family . I can go on and on and WindowShopper your very brave to speak about any form of medical problem and I clap my hands for you to bring it up and the people who are critical sorry to say this but the saying "water off a ducks back " springs to mind.

I always talk about these issues on all media forms, recently I hosted few spaces on twitter where so many people told me they never heard about dyslexia, ADHD and autism etc which was surprising and shocking.

Schools could still do a lot more to help than they are doing. I am sure its not as bad as it used to be back in the black & white days when I was at school and the teachers were often the ones doing the bullying. Much easier to call a pupil thick and stupid than accept that your own teaching methods are not up to scratch.

Back in those days they didnt know as much about some of the conditions like Autism that we do today. Having had my own son expelled from school and later being diagnosed as autistic it is clear to me that my own troubles at school were in no doubt due to my autism - had I been diagnosed back then maybe I would have been treated better and not bullied as much by teachers. I was lucky in that I became the school clown so as not to get bullied by pupils.

Sadly although schools have more understanding of mental health than ever before, and therefore less excuses its still sad to see head teachers more concerned about the reputation of the school than the pupils they are supposed to look after. Even my sons 'so-called 'special needs' school was poor in this respect.

Oh bless that's a shame the teachers don't do their job properly, I was a bright student in my school and college I had to work extra hard to keep my deadlines, the hardest thing for me was follow the set of instructions, my all teachers told me, "I rush" well I didn't I was not getting too many instructions at once.

I think you have to realise that some people are just ignorant and that they have no empathy. I did think we had moved on as a society but unfortunately it's not the case.

Don't let people you don't even know bring you down

It is awful, I think the world is coming to a stage of acceptance very slowly- too slowly in my eyes. We should have accepted illnesses a long time ago.

I suffer from chronic illnesses and for years this made me be judged on that rather than Me as a person, I have found over time people are starting to accept illnesses physical or mental which is really needed.

My son is 4 and autistic hes had a few nasty comments but other people have defended him on these when people have said nasty things , it's becoming better for people to understand.

I hope all the best for use all , take care
