Do You Shop around for Dentist?

Ask a Question

I am going to have a very expensive treatment for first time and I wonder what people do if in pain. Do you try to fix it asap or you shop around? I am talking about private dentist as I know NHS has a fix price.

Private will be more expensive

But if you are registered with a nhs dentist they need to see you within 24 hours for an emergency

My dentist started as an NHS practice ( grants and incentives to start up) in an area where there was shortage of dentists , but after 15 years went private . I stuck with them as I trusted my dentist and there were long waiting lists for NHS dentists in the area anyway. Personally don't feel private treatment is any better than NHS treatment , Recently paid £102 for a filling which is only £62 on the NHS but didn't have that option.

We've been lucky in being able to find NHS each time we've moved ... and also that each dentist has been really good... a far cry from my childhood dentist ...ouch!!!!! I think health is really important so finding a decent dentist is a must .... before it's needed.

When we moved to the area we currently live, the nhs dentist was a two year wait to even apply to be in the practice (rural village, closest town supplying the villages) so I went to a private dentist.

The practice I’m with, very friendly and take time to get to know their patients (since become good friends with the dental nurses). My son also attends the same dentist, and his dentist always asks how is he and has a good chat with him.

Yes it’s more expensive for treatment but never had an issue getting an appointment the same day or next day if needed.

Just can't understand how it can be a massive difference between treatments. So a filling is around £100 but a root canal is £500 and on top you need to put crowns so basically or you have savings or you loose your teeth ..

I have not been to the dentist for the last 30years. Absolutely terrified of them. I hate spiders but rather share a room with a spider than a dentist lol.

eyeballkerry haha I used to hate them but not anymore. Thing I don't like is the injection for the local anesthetic.

The worse thing is having to keep your mouth open and I feel like I am going to choke, I have never had an injection or a filling so really I shouldn’t be afraid.

Can you 'shop around' for a dentist? If you find one with a vacancy , there's no 'trial' of the service or personnel that they use. If you go privately, I suppose you can hop from practice to practice until you find a service that fits.
