Shoppers Lost £100m in Vouchers Expiring in Lockdown

In the News

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-54304491

Which? Conducted a survey and estimated that UK shoppers may have lost a total of nearly £100m in unused vouchers during the coronavirus lockdown

I have perhaps lost out on a few discount vouchers, or money off coupon items, but no real losses in terms of gift cards

If you have, you could write to the companies and see if they’re willing to extend them for you

What do you think of this?

I made sure I spent all my gift cards before lockdown started. I went to Primark the weekend before lockdown and used my gift card to get my son clothes and my other gift cards could be used online so I used them at the start of lockdown. I haven't lost any money in gift cards or discount vouchers.

I lost a gift experience for my son that we bought him for Christmas - it was a driving experience, we waited to book it after lockdown restrictions were lifted and the sites all reopened (which was the middle of July) and we booked it for the 15th August.. on the 14th August, I got a message saying all the sites had shut again due to new COVID restrictions, but obviously by this point, the voucher had been redeemed so Virgin Experiences said it had been used and the driving company said they can’t do anything about it and it’s down to Virgin’s rules.

That’s a shame. Now and I again when I’ve not been able to use a gift experience in time, the company usually tend it for a limited period. But I guess under these unusual times they can’t do much about it, as lots of people would be in the same position

MrsCraig The validity periods on Morrison's vouchers vary, Morrisons are very vague they simply state if it is queried:

"How long can I use the vouchers for?

Each voucher will set out an expiry date".

https://groceries.morrisons.com/webshop/displayContent.do?category=ws5%2FcustomerServices%2FtermsAndConditions&page=voucherTerms

Must assume that the date on Imnotcheap 's voucher has expired.

That’s a shame. You could try to write to them to see if they’d give you back the points? No harm in trying

I lost a competition win for £250 travel. They were polite and friendly but couldn't extend it any longer than the end of May. I was disappointed but considering the circumstances I felt there was more to worry about than something I hadn't paid for.

I don't care how polite they are, it can often help if you politely tell them: that a happy customer will tell their friends an unhappy customer will tell everyone.

davidstockport Sadly, it was part of a competition win from last year and had to be booked by end of March - I had already had ample time to book it but was leaving it to the last minute. (then fell ill - Murphy's Law) They gave me two months extra and I wasn't prepared to book anything. I mentioned their attitude because there have been many cases of bolshie staff dismissing problems without listening.

sunny101 Thanks for the explanation - I suppose in such circumstances their refusal to extend the validity is justifiable. Look on the bright side though it could have been worse. . . if you'd got somewhere then couldn't get back. Image

I got a free rail pass last year (because of some voluntary work I do) I used it ONCE (went to Blackpool and came back) it expired during lockdown. BUT have problem with my right eye so I see any coloured light ten times. It means I can go to the nearest traffic lights close my left eye and pretend I'm at Blackpool illuminations (any time of the year).😀 Image

I lost a couple of gift cards that expired during lockdown. I couldn’t use them because the shops were closed when they expired, and I only got them in March just before lockdown so never really had a chance to use them.

That’s a shame. If they’re big retailers you could write to the head offices and try to see if they’d extend them?

hspexy I did and I was told there was nothing they could do about it, which is a shame, but I’m sure they would lose a lot of money if they had to extend gift cards for everyone.

I don't get too many gift cards, but when I do will spend them quickly. Too often in the past customers have been left high and dry with gift cards when companies have gone bust.

That’s good of them. Good customer service goes a long way, and certainly ought to be mentioned 😊
