Smiling is Infectious, by the Late Great Spike Milligan

Other

Maybe I am late to the party but I had never seen/heard of this poem before, but hey, it is so true and hope it brightens your day as it did mine!

Smiling is infectious

You catch it like the flu,

When someone smiled at me today,

I started smiling too.

I passed around the corner

And someone saw me grin.

When he smiled I realised

I’d passed it on to him.

I thought about that smile,

Then realized its worth.

A single smile, just like mine

Could travel round the earth

So if you feel a smile begin,

Don’t leave it undetected.

Let’s start an epidemic quick

And get the world infected!

It's a shame that most people don't smile more. I have always known that they were infectious but hadn't ever heard the poem before. It is very uplifting 😀

tumblespots you're right, I must admit I do smile quite a bit at people when out, if they look friendly and I tend to get into conversations in the supermarket lol. I think dog owners do it more as when I walk my sons' dogs I often get a 'good morning' or similar.

My best mates brother has learning difficulties and life is very challenging for him, however he always has a massive smile every time I see him, he's a joy to be around, he always puts a smile on my face

martinlufc5637 there was a similar guy in the supermarket the other day and he was obviously with a carer out shopping. He moved aside for me to pass and I smiled and said thank you and he immediately came back with 'you're welcome'. I kept seeing him throughout my shopping and he was smiling, laughing and also being polite and friendly to other shoppers, he too was a joy.

Lynibis, Martinlufc5637...Nice to hear you speak so warmly of people with learning disabilities..

As Support Workers my partner & I have seen most people interact brilliantly with the people we support or had the odd few just shun them...

It makes their day & our's when people take their time to smile & say hello when we are out in the community.

janphoenix51 he came on holiday with us in August, people kept staring at him in restaurants, he's got bad OCD, so when it came to sitting on the chairs ect..he had to inspect them for 10 minutes, I had a few choice words for them, yes he has some complex needs but he's a joy to be around, i judge people on their character, he has bucket loads of character, a warm friendly caring man, i txt him every day to make sure he's ok

Nat King Cole gave a great rendition

Smile even though your heart is aching

Smile even though it's breaking

When there are clouds in the sky, you'll get by

If you smile through your fear and sorrow

Smile and maybe tomorrow

You'll see the sun come shining through for you

Light up your face with gladness

Hide every trace of sadness

Although a tear may be ever so close

That's the time you must keep on trying

Smile, what's the use of crying?

You'll find that life is still worthwhile

If you just smile

That's the time you must keep on trying

Smile, what's the use of crying?

You'll find that life is still worthwhile

If you just smile

telmel I think that is more likely to make you cry Tel! I loved Nat King Cole music when young, so did my dad, I remember getting him one of Nat's LP's for his birthday one year.

We do to smile more and make people happier unfortunately our society is going the other way. Where i live the younger generation have a real attitude.

eyeballkerry again, I think it is because we are exposed to far more disrespect, rudeness and even aggression these days so we fear rejection if we make a friendly approach to others. Mostly because we see and hear so much of it in the newspapers, tv and social media.

Lynibis I don’t fear rejection but so many people have an attitude. You walk along the street people don’t move so you land up walking in the road. People don’t thank you always for letting them go while driving. The list goes on. We found out how selfish many people became during covid

This holds true in my experience, most people can’t help smiling back if you smile at them.

Our son is the definition of this! He says hello to everyone and always smiles at them. He gets ridiculously excited by seeing a dog or cat. He has made a few people's days by smilling at them and asking how they are. He is only 5, almost 6, so still has that innocence about him but he is just so friendly to everyone.

MrsCraig his parents are obviously the same and he has learned it from you, if only all parents set same example.

Lynibis he is always told to say thank you to anyone who serves in him a shop or restaurant and first thing he does no matter where he goes is say hello to someone and ask how they are. We always teach him to be polite and friendly.

I love Spike Milligan always did. He can be right smiles can be infectious but there are just some miserable gits around and they always seem to be behind me tutting and sighing cos I’m walking slowly. One person was sighing so loudly and for so long I asked her if she needed to borrow my inhaler!!

Another of Spike Milligan’s - short but i love it

String ……

Is a very important thing

Rope is thicker

But string is quicker

I would love to have met him.

I remember him on a talk show and they got round to talking about what he would like written on his gravestone - his reply ………..

Told you I was ill

😂😂

Through every nook and every cranny

The wind blew in on poor old Granny

Around her knees, into each ear

(And up nose as well, I fear)

All through the night the wind grew worse

It nearly made the vicar curse

The top had fallen off the steeple

Just missing him (and other people)

It blew on man, it blew on beast

It blew on nun, it blew on priest

It blew the wig off Auntie Fanny-

But most of all, it blew on Granny!
