Why do the Government want everyone to give up smoking?

Is this really what they think?

As usual I believe it is a ploy to try and make us think that they care, as without the EMORMOUS tax revenue from cigarette/tobacco sales that they would lose out. If everyone gave up they would have to pass that tax ‘bill’ onto another section of the population.

What do you think?

What they lose in revenue they would gain by nhs not being burdened by smoking related illnesses. Besides, whatever the motive surely it is better not to smoke than to smoke.

Yes, that is true but in the meantime you have all the present and past smokers using up NHS resources. It takes a long time for the benefits to filter through. Sorry no pun intended.

The country would be better off financially if everyone stopped smoking- all tobacco is imported and a great amount of it is imported illegally. The revenue from taxing tobacco products is totally outweighed by the cost of treating smoke related illnesses, the only plus side for the exchequer is that smokers don't live as long, on average, so don't usually draw their pensions for as long as non-smokers. Private pension schemes are aware of this so give enhanced annuity rates to smokers.

i personally don't like smoking, haven't tried smoking... if others do want to smoke i hope its done in a public smoking area not anywhere at anytime... ............. not sure why government wants or encourages people t stop smoking but probably reducing smoke related illnesses .....

The less people smoke, the less people with diseases which strains our NHS. Personally, I hate smoking and never have, it's pointless and akin to burning your money away.

Well we do live in a democracy and just as people can drink alcohol, smoke dope, eat fattening food etc so too can they smoke. If the government banned cigarettes we would not stop smoking, it would just go the way of drug taking and become undercover, black market and chancers making money out of people with addiction. Look what happened during prohibition in America when they tried to ban alcohol.
