Have You Noticed An Increase In Dog Attack Incidents?

In the News

There seems to be an uprise in dog attacks especially in and around Birmingham. The West Midlands has had 800 incidents last year but that could be down to more people getting pets in lockdown.

In February .. an escaped guard dog from a nearby business attacked a two year old and three year old as they were walking with their mother.. and then another case....a 25 year old woman died from her injuries from a dog attack in her home. She was by herself at the time and the dog lived there too.

But what really shook me is this recent case .. a great grandmother named Lucille downer was dragged around her garden by her neck and sadly mauled to death by her neighbour's dogs. It's understood the dogs escaped through a hole in the garden fence. I breaks my heart everytime I see the old ladies face in the news .. Lucille had Dementia.. but used to be cook for those in a care home .. She was looking forward to her 86th birthday and was thinking of having a family get together.. it's just so tragic .. i can't help getting emotional whenever I think about what her last moments must have been like.. she would have been 86 today 💔

Me too and have you noticed that their owners always take offence if you ask them to hold their dogs and say he wouldn't hurt anyone Nadiaparveen

beccatavender you are frightened and had a bad experience. That’s not good.

But reading more stories aren’t going to help you. Remember theses stories are very rare. But you think it happens a lot more. These are bad owners.

I try not to let my fear show, when my son was younger as I didn't want him to give him a complex. If I know the owner and the dog I will stand next to it but I am always a little wary, I can't understand those people who go up to a strange dog and try to pet it!

I have friends who the dog is a family member, which I understand but not for me 😶

beccatavender it’s not nice having fears. I fully understand.

I don’t understand people just touching a dog, if It’s on a lead. I’d would ask first. Always best. But knowing a lot about dogs you normally can tell by the dogs manner. But there are so many people that don’t understand that.

People come up and just fed my dog. That always annoyed me. One they didn’t ask. Two she had allergies.

People do make you wonder things sometimes.

This is media for you. Report stuff that makes people read then make it all out of proportion.

There could be a small increase I’m not sure.

They also will pick ok a certain breed because it sales papers gets people chatting.

Spreading rumours not knowing the real facts.

Click on a button and share before reading the article for example.

There are some **** owners out there that shouldn’t have dogs. And some people that shouldn’t have kids.

I was attacked as a youngster by a Jack Russell thankfully it didn't have a long term effect on me as I now own a Jack Russel myself. I recognise bad dogs are usually 9 out of 10 times due to bad owners. As rossruby1977 says those type of extreme dog attacks are very very rare. My mum was always wary of staffies due to their bad press...I'm yet to meet a bad Staffie. There all soft as clarts.

A responsible dog owner should not take offence to you asking to leash their dog tho. All dogs should be kept on a leash in public areas imo anyways. Mine certainly is.

It is very sad to see these story's in the news right now, I feel so much for the person and there family's.

I do think a lot of dogs behaviour is down to there owners, which is really unfortunate and dangerous for others, these kind of people shouldn't have dogs.

I have a dog myself and she is always on a lead to be safe.

I don't understand why some people don't do what there supposed to with there dog.

I have been at a park with my kids and had a dog chase us and bite my mums dog. If your going to have a dog treat the dog right and train it.

That’s a sad story. He must be so upset 😞

But it mentions it’s bitten before. I wouldn’t of got a dog that’s bitten before. Especially if you’re not a dog behaviourist or had no experience with a dog. I am very good with dogs. But if I knew one that had bitten a person, I wouldn’t go owning one. As I am not a dog behaviourist. I’ve trained my dogs from puppies.

My mate got bitten by a husky that was his neighbours. They bought it off someone that told them it was a bit nippy. He grabbed my mates arm luckily my mate was strong and managed to keep standing. They managed to get the dog off him. The neighbour could of been like the last person, and to of sold it on again. But luckily she had morals and got it put down. It was only there for a few weeks then that happened And she had kids. It was a ticking time bomb. She knew nothing about dogs.

It’s always the people not the dogs. It’s very important at the start to train them well. And if it’s showing any behaviour issues like that you get a professional to intervene. That’s why dogs can be expensive to own.

Some People don’t train them at all or half train them. Then Sadly these attacks happen. Then it’s placed in the news. And they then only mention certain breads that bite. As it sells papers gets people to read the article.

If you actually look up what dogs bite the most you may be surprised.

I agree it's the owners responsibility to ensure a dog is safe, I didn't realise that people must sell on a problem pet

beccatavender there are too many people that have no morals. Sell them on to get money. Then you get people wanting dogs to be aggressive. Then you get owners that don’t have a clue then the dog will chose a path of wanting to do what it wants. Sometimes that is to be dominate and bite.

More should be done to stop this, make people go on a course get a dog licence etc when purchasing a dog.

We have dogs barking day and night. Have been to council and RSPCA nobody's interested, there seems to be more and more now, dog poo everywhere, should be more laws, we can't even sit in our garden anymore its like they've taken over and can do what they like, I was told that's what dogs do is bark.but not to the point of ruining our lives

jwhitaker537 I know what you're saying.

I had some massive bust ups with my neighbour a few years back. Their dogs were barking continuously from 8am to 10pm every day.

Was just about to get sound monitoring equipment installed by the council, but fortunately, they got evicted.
