Sports Direct Vow to Stay Open despite New Restrictions
In the News
Sports Direct said it would remain open "where possible" as it was "uniquely well placed to help keep the UK as fit and healthy as possible"
While I don't necessarily believe their motivation. Sports Direct do stock bikes & cycling clothing (even if it's only a small part of their range) and bicycle shops are one of the few places that are allowed to stay open under the latest round of restrictions. Plus, it's important people still remain active during this difficult time.

- Update - Sports Direct have since decided to remain closed - https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-52011915 (thanks to Mango4 )
People have had time to arrange for their keeping fit regime and this is purely for the sake of making money.
We are told to stay indoors from now so do they really expect any customers? No, but they are willing to risk the health of their workers. Staff should walk out instead of risking spreading this disease. They have been told they will get paid.
Most SD staff are on zero hours. I applied and got a 'permanent part-time job, approx. 16 hrs/wk', it was when we got to shift rota that I was informed that it was only 4 hrs over a week and not always guaranteed. I passed on the job.
Yes it is important that people stay active but that doesn't mean you need to buy loads of sport equipment. Simply go onto YouTube at 9am each morning and do the Joe Wicks exercise videos. Or there are plenty of exercise classes now doing online videos on YouTube, facebook.
I think the Greedy Mike Ashley realised If he stayed open now and put his staff at risk then people would boycott Sports Direct when this is all over.
blacklabrador Mike Ashley already had a bad reputation for staff working conditions at Sports Direct. The real reason for the u-turn will probably be along the lines of a threatening late night phone call from a senior government official.
If we have to stay indoors how do we buy & use a bicycle? Ride around the lounge/living room?
tumblespots / Lynibis despite the new restrictions, the government still want people to go outside and get some exercise. They just don't want you to do it with other people -
- One form of exercise a day such as a run, walk or cycle. This should be done alone or only with people you live with
Bicycle shops are currently exempt from closure as it's safer for emergency workers, supermarket staff, etc to cycle to work than use public transport. Riding your bike is also a good way to stay fit. Staying inactive for an extended period of time increases the risk of developing other health issues.
Sports direct can be quite busy at times and may be difficult to keep your distance. A regular bike shop isn't typically that busy. However sports direct do have a basic range of cycle accessories and spares and a few bikes. If you had a puncture and needed an emergency inner tube they can provide that service.
