Starting Your Own Business?!

Ask a Question

I'm currently on maternity leave, second child, not wanting to go back full time, as child care is so impossible. I'm looking to drop my hours from 60 to 36 (3 x night shift so partner has kids, no need for child care!)... what could I do to "top money up"? I don't want to sell avon/candles, I'm looking to start up my own business...hit me with ideas!

(I know I have to declare earnings and pay tax)

If we had any good ideas we would all be doing it lol. Starting a business usually means having some capital to start. Any home work type jobs do not pay very well.

Hi

It looks like you write well. Have you considered writing articles for UK magazines? A one page article will generally earn you around £200 to £300.

It may take you a little while to get established but that’s true with most start ups.

My advice would be to focus on the subject area(s) you are personally most interested in, or where you have relevant personal experience.

Don’t overlook selling via eBay and Amazon as an excellent way to start-up a small business without having much start up capital. Reading a book like

eBay.co.uk For Dummies

should give you some inspiration and useful tips.

I do a bit of ironing alongside my part time job. Sorted myself some insurance which is only a couple of pound a month. I charge per level basket rather than item & I find it works well for me. On an average week I usually have 4/5 baskets which isn’t loads but it just gives me a little extra in the pot. Perhaps I’m odd as I really like ironing......I set myself up in front of the tv & catch up on all my programmes so its kinda like being paid to watch Netflix x

That's the secret of any successful small business: doing something you like doing and not caring too much about the money.

davidstockport Yes, if you can turn a hobby into something that makes you money and still enjoy it that's great. Like photography for example.

Johnny I actually did it (with guitar playing and singing) eventually I had to "give up the day job".

Perfect!

By the way, I was thinking about you the other day, when I posted this. Read on to find out why. Any use?

Amazing! For the price and service... not so bright but touchscreen! One side is magnified. Thats really cool. The size is just adequate. This might sound funny but i use it for guitar inspection/repair..

I have something similar without the lights (it's seen better days) although I don't do many guitar repairs I found the small web cams with LEDs (they're a couple of pounds from China) were great for looking inside guitars, needed to be near a computer though.

I've thought about it but it's not something we can just snap our fingers and it happens.

Cafes? Too many.

Supermarket? Maybe.

Electronic store? Pass.

Buy/Sell store? Pass.

Quality takeaway? Possible.

Rent apartments for vacations and to live in? Maybe.

There's also gentrification which tends to be seen negatively but it doesn't have to, gentrification usually recovers cities and locales once deemed a "craphole" but once everything is organized, cleaned, up and running then people want in. I personally am not a fan of gentrification in places where it doesn't need, would be fantastic if most of Central London was revamped 'cause a lot of places are in bad shape and with crime on the rise.

Let's say, you might have an apartment (flat) in a 'shady' location but if it's fixed, painted and well promoted it raises its value considerably afterwards.

So, anyway, it's not hard to figure out what will happen and markets with potential but rather where it truly is worth investing.
