Subway Rolls Ruled Too Sugary to Be Bread in Ireland

In the News

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-54370056

The rolls used in Subway's hot sandwiches contain too much sugar to be considered bread, according to Ireland's Supreme Court.

Ireland's highest court made the ruling in a case about how the bread is taxed.

An Irish franchisee of the US company had claimed it should not pay VAT on the rolls it uses in heated sandwiches.

But the court ruled that because of the level of sugar in the rolls they cannot be taxed as bread, which is classed as a "staple product" with zero VAT.

Under Ireland's VAT Act of 1972, ingredients in bread such as sugar and fat should not exceed 2% of the weight of flour in the dough.

It has been a while since I’ve had a Subway, mainly as it’s not cheap and not that good. I guess it’ll never get cheaper 😂

Are you a fan of the sub?

I read this and laughed we tried to get breakfast sub recently but they not doing them right now

The high sugar content is probably why they taste so good especially the Italian herb and cheese we don't go often but had no idea how unhealthy they are

I read in the paper earlier today that it has as much sugar as 2 digestives, so it’s more like a biscuit than a bread lol

Now people know they might have to start making a low sugar version knowing this will put people off hspexy

Maybe they should double bluff and start selling a cake with no sugar in it and claim its not a cake not pay vat on that 😜

I've had a few Subway breakfasts in my time. Doesn't surprise me they sweeten them up a bit. If they want repeat custom they have to make them a bit addictive. I've probably visited Subway about 20-30 times in my life probably more than KFC. A Subway visit is always a treat but I've only used Subway for about 4 years and only about once every 2 months approx. Just had a Subway discount book come through the door.

It is true, the breads are soo sweet in the UK...not just the Subway ones...they should remove the sugar from them.

I must admit I love fairly sweet bread. One of my favourites is the dutch style tiger or giraffe bread which is quite sweet. There are plenty of low sugar breads available though just they tend to be more expensive.

I agree. I’m not a fan of the doughy breads. one of the reasons I’m not a fan of subway

They always have weird consistency compared to normal bread so knew there was something odd about them

The one time I was forced to enter a subway it was so dirty I have never set foot in one since, let alone tried the food. Filthy toilet, spills on the floor and tables unwiped......and it was practically empty so no excuse at all.
