Supermarket Damage to My Car
Other
Twice this year I have parked in a car park both supermarkets and had my car damage by another car. Both times the people didn't leave notes and just drove off. The photo shows the damage from todays incidence.
Although I know its not bad. Is there anything I can do about this?? I would have felt better if the person who hit me would apologise and acknowledge their guilt. But they drove off and left no information.
Im more upset because a year ago today (exactly) I was in a car crash where I was hit from behind when I was at a standstill at 70mph. I've suffered significantly from that accident which wasn't my fault and I had to buy a new vehicle which is the car which was hit today. Im just really upset and really couldn't have happened on a worse date
You can see if the supermarket has cctv and see if you can see the cars number plate that hit you and take it to the police. They will be able to find the owner and hopefully you can get your car fixed. I hope you start to feel better soon and I'm sorry you went through such a horrible accident
Thank you for your advice thats really helpful. Im still in pain from the accident and still having physio. Been told its not permanent so thankful for that. And thankful to still be here!
laurencook733 it sounds like a horrible accident. My mum was in a really bad accident when younger, she still has pins and needles in her legs from the accident. I'm glad it isn't permanent and hopefully goes away soon.
MrsCraig I actually suffered PTSD symptoms for a while was horrific. I really hope I get better. Im putting my trust in my physio!
laurencook733 I'm not surprised you suffered PTSD, it sounds absolutely horrific. You are very brave to get back in a car after something like that. I sincerely hope that the physio helps!
laurencook733 sorry to read this. I think Mrs Craig had some good advice with the CCTV. I was in a car crash when I was 13 and the car flipped over and rolled several times. took me years to get over. It's why I don't drive. I hope you feel better soon. x
After my crash last year I hated driving but forced myself because my work revolves me driving around England. It was hard and is still hard. Even now if someone gets to close to me behind I have mild panic attacks. My partner wasn't in the car during my accident but now whenever there is traffic ahead and I slow down, I notice even he checks my mirrors for me. Really had a physical and mental impact on me
laurencook733 I had nightmares for ages that I was in a car that flipped over. It does take time to heal. Saying that, for me, I was never able to drive. It freaked me out that much. It's 30 years in 2021 that it happened and I still don't have plans to drive. I can totally relate.
I suggest you write to the manager of the store pronto, requesting a copy of any relevant TV footage, and include the following information.
- The reason for your request (i.e. your car was damaged by another vehicle and that you wish to identify the other vehicle responsible in order to submit your insurance claim)
- Your full name and address and contact details
- Name and Address of store where the incident occurred
- Date and time frame of the incident
- If in the store car park, describe what area you were parked (near disabled bays, far right toward exit etc) as accurately as you can
- Description of your vehicle, including the registration number, make, model, and colour
- Description and photo of the damage
Remember that supermarkets don't retain CCTV footage for very long, and that they may only be willing to release CCTV footage to the Police or to an insurance company.
Although worth a try it's unlikely the supermarket will co-operate in releasing CCTV coverage, the data protection act prevents them (or makes it very questionable) to do so. The police might be able to view the video, but if no one was injured, you'll probably find they're not interested. There is also a chance the supermarket doesn't have access to the CCTV recording if the car park is controlled by a private car park operator.
davidstockport so what i have been informed when I called and spoke to them is that the CCTV does not cover the place I was parked in any event. Tl
laurencook733 That MIGHT be true. some CCTV on car parks is just to register cars entering and leaving for enforcing time restrictions, but CCTV supposedly for customer protection is pretty useless if it only covers certain parts of the car park.
As I've already implied the police (possibly only in some areas) are usually not interested, even if an eye witness or victim supplies them with a registration number. In my area the police will keep crime figures down by not even allowing such crimes to be registered.
It might surprise some to know that if police employees (civilian or uniformed) witnesses such an incident they are instructed not to become involved - it wastes too much time,
davidstockport I think unfortunately I'm just going to have to deal with the consequences.
That does surprise me but it is understandable. More serious crimes to deal with than the marks on my bumper!
People are b*stards , I blame the insurance firms , everyone is frightened of the consequences vis a vis reporting to them
There deserves to be some consequence on them. But doesn't feel there will be in this event
Could se of they have cctv. I had someone hit my car quite badly years ago and they didn't have cctv. Had to get the whole door changed
I can assure you that if CCTV actually exists, the chances of any individual being allowed to view it or have a copy are very very slim.
The data protection act makes it much easier, and safer, for companies using CCTV to deny an incident has been recorded.
If you have local Facebook page then put a post on there with the time you were there. I personally know of instances where people have done this and someone has replied to say they saw it and that they took the registration number. I hope you find out who the dishonest critter was. Good luck and a happy new year to all
laurencook733 you're welcome, its worth a try. I got taught years ago to take the reg number of cars beside yours in car park, nowadays I take quick snap. I walk round my car and check before I get in. It's helped me 3 times in catching a driver that's made off.
