Supermarkets and Relocation of Food Sections
Ask a Question
Why do supermarkets change the location of their products every so often?
I mean they don’t just swap a few things, they relocate an entire aisle or section to another area within the supermarket.
I find it unsettling and frustrating. If I want to try a different brand or a new food item, then I will.
Shuffling their stock to physically different areas within the same store doesn’t persuade me to spend more or try new items. Does it make you spend more or buy new items?
Does anyone ‘enjoy’ it when supermarkets relocate entire sections to different areas? Do you like trying to find the items you would normally be able to find relatively quickly?
It’s always annoying, but it doesn’t take long to get used to it. Mind you, I do dislike it when the relocation is illogical - I recall trying to find the asian food section in Asda, and it wasn’t in the world food aisles (instead they put it in the middle of the sauces and pasta aisle)
No hate when they change a store about, doesn't make me buy any more or less just winds me up. In the end I either find what I want or just say forget this and go elsewhere so they loose custom.
It jam in my local Tesco the have it somewhere new every time I’m in the place drives me my
It doesn't really bother me when they move stuff about. I always have a shopping list which I stick to so the store layout has no impact on me buying more.
One reason items are rearranged is larger brands will pay supermarkets a Slotting Fee to get their products placed in a particular area and shelf in stores. But, it is a little annoying, it doesn't make me buy more either. Within 1 or 2 shopping trips you know where everything you want is located again. It's frustrating for customers and probably a lot of extra work for staff.
Plus, relocating products during the pandemic is problematic as shoppers waste extra time wandering around the store trying to find what they want. Increasing the risk of infection, which has led to complaints, for example in North Wales after Christmas - https://www.dailypost.co.uk/news/north-wales-news/tesco-under-fire-shoppers-rearranging-19613372
Although, my biggest peeve is when particular items you like get discontinued.
I don't really like it when they move things around. I usually like to get in and out quickly when I do my shopping, so it's frustrating when I have to wander around looking for something they've moved.
I can understand why they move things around as annoying as it is. What annoys me most about Asda at least is that they have items on offer at the ends of some aisles which are often nowhere near similar products. Drinks especially seem prone to this, so you pick up a bottle of drink, then half way round the store you find the offers - so end up swapping them around. I gave up returning the items to their shelves long time ago!
I think it is done to try and entice the customers to see things that they wouldn't usually buy and therefore spend more. In truth though, all it does is annoy! My only hope is that at least the shop gets a good clean while changing around shelves....
Simple marketing trick to increase sales. If you know where everything is most people will tend to head for those items every week by passing other products, if they regularly move things, it disorientates you and you have to look at other items /shelves to now find what you want, in the process your more likely to pick up new or additional items as well as the product you went in for.
Think it’s psychological with them
It’s well the customer knows where everything is and not buying what we want them to buy
Yes dear I did noticed that I find annoying for example I mostly do shopping in Tesco when I used to one aisle without looking at numbers after few months they changed to different one i don’t like that same with Morrison I never understand these Super market tricks
It's partly so that customers go to where they think "Item A" is, and see "Item B" instead, and might be tempted to buy that.
It's also due to seasonality, items that sell better at a certain time of year will be given prime slots.
I don’t enjoy shopping when supermarkets decide to relocate aisles and aisles of goods. This happened in my local store last week. The result? I came away without half of my shopping list. The shelves were half empty and the staff restocking did not know where the items I wanted had been relocated to.
It annoys me when they do this as I don’t want to spend any additional time in the shops than I have to. Even weeks after items have been relocated, staff often still can’t direct me to some products I’m trying to buy, so rather than buy something else I take my business elsewhere. I don’t think it helps them as much as they think it does.
I think supermarkets should have a separate vegan and vegetarian section for food and toiletries
