Supplements- Probiotic, Propolis, Garlic, Turmeric etc...

Ask a Question

Do you use any other supplements rather than vitamins and minerals? Do you find it helps? I bought some probiotic capsules for my husband and it does help with bloating and IBS. I take some echinacea to help me get over the colds. Lately I seen grapeseed, curcumin, cranberry, even charcoal supplements... I wonder if anyone else tried any of it.

I take probiotic everyday for stomach issues. I think they do slightly help ease some of my symptoms. I also try to drink a cup of fennel tea a day to help with digestive issues I have.

I read a quite in depth article about probiotics but it said they are not particularly effective unless taken alongside prebiotics which are a sort of fertiliser for the probiotics. You can get them together in one capsule.

I take turmeric, when I remember, and it seems to be a good all rounder for joints etc.

My consultant advised me to take Busy B supplements from Holland and Barrett as they can aid your immune system and healing.

We also take turmeric and cod liver oil.

gerrykelly25 I'm trying to find something to boost my 7 year old sons immune system because he keeps getting colds and coughs without fail every winter...and especially now when everyone will be panicking about Corona...

BlueOrchid maybe go to Holland and Barrett and get some advice? They are usually really helpful. With your son being young, he may need a lower dosage than adults. Vitamin C may also help with the colds.

gerrykelly25 I usually go to my little local health food shop. I tried kids floradix, sambucol etc...he still gets it.. to be fair I think he has mild asthma..but because he gets coughs only over autumn/winter gp told me "its hard to tell"...

I’m currently on iron supplements for anemia but Ive always found any supplements make no difference for me.. my older dog however, I have given her cod liver oil since she was 7, recently tried changing to an expensive joint supplement and it did NOTHING for her, but cod liver oil works wonders!

sarahgreen15 I dont eat meat so I usually do take iron supplements. Another thing is if you do it properly. Iron supplements should be taken on empty stomach one hour before meal with a drink containing vit c. I usually take it with orange juice. Maybe the dosage is too low for you? The iron supplements which works for me is floradix (I prefer tablets because im not a fan of the liquid taste) and gentle iron tablets (these are very good and dont cause other issues😁).

BlueOrchid I’m currently on prescribed iron, it’s 3 x 60mg tablets a day, I couldnt believe the strength, given the supplements you can buy in shops recommend a maximum dose of 14mg a day..

sarahgreen15 you must be seriously low on iron...well doctors wouldn't give it to you unless they saw on your blood tests that you need it.. once I kept getting appointments telling gp that I feel low, tired etc...and they would keep telling me that "it's your lifestyle, work/life balance and being a mum"...eventually I got ordered blood tests. Didnt hear anything. At my gp they will contact you if anything needs doing after. Then few months later I called them again because nothing changed...and guess what? I had aneamia and was prescribed iron tablets only no one contacted me?!😮 sometimes I do feel like they dont listen and just want you out asap because probably you're "ok"...

BlueOrchid I’m currently pregnant so I think that has something to do with the strength, obviously they are wanting to make sure baby is getting enough.. I’ve been anaemic in the past and the doctors prescribed me iron that was out of stock everywhere so I never bothered and somehow my iron levels just fixed themselves until now!

I tried probiotic but didn't help the only thing that did was hemp oil but that became too expensive

Imnotcheap I looked on Amazon there are a lot of different probiotics now. Also they vary in strength and some of them are mixed with other stuff too. I usually get Optibac or bio-kult for my husband and these seems to work so I usually stick to these brands. I suppose hemp oil like any other super foods etc at first they are very expensive until next thing comes along and then it tends to drop in price a bit. At the minute hemp or even cannabis oil are all the hype.

BlueOrchid hi again, it's as I said above that prebiotics are like a food or fertiliser for the probiotics, a bit like you said to Sarah that in order for iron to be absorbed it needs vitamin C. Also it is better to buy turmeric with black pepper for same reason, who knew lol!

Lynibis I just watched a quick video about. So probiotics is the bacteria found in fermented milk products. And prebiotics is fibre found in certain vegetables and as you said like a fertiliser for probiotics.. it's all so confusing 😂! It also said that prebiotics are actually better and can reduce inflammation etc...I looked for quicker healing reduced inflammation etc and apparently arnica, grape seed extract and bromelain (found in pineapples) were mentioned throughout several articles I read. I know you could get the effect by consuming them fruits/vegetables but some of them you would need to consume a lot to get the benefits and for some the body isn't capable to break it down..

I only have my Apple cider vinegar in the morning for my joints and other supposed health benefits. The rest, such as drinking green tea, adding chillis and spices to food and eating fruit, is done for pleasure mainly

hspexy all of this is very good. And green tea has plenty good properties. Problem is I can never drink it hot because my tea always gets cold with many things I need to sort and when it's cold it tastes bitter and disgusting 😂

BlueOrchid it’s probably the brand of tea you’ve got that’s not good. Green tea has a lower burning point, and will get more bitter if left in water to stew for a long period. Have you tried green tea powders, like matcha? That’s not bitter at all

hspexy I havent yet.😁 I'll put it on my list to try. I think I seen it next to various powders and went for spirulina instead...and then put generous scoop in my smoothie...😂😂it doesnt taste that nice...

BlueOrchid lol yes things that are good for you and ‘tasting nice’ don’t often go hand in hand. And matcha is indeed an acquired taste. But it can be blended well, and has lots of health benefits

hspexy hmmm you dont fill me with confidence there😂😂... I do like some healthy stuff... such as chia seeds, quinoa I actually like it better than rice, buckwheat, I even learnt to like avocado and olives😂😂😂...

BlueOrchid lol just a warning that matcha can sometimes have a fishy, seaweed taste - perhaps that’s why it’s healthy? 😜

I did quite a bit of research before buying a probiotic. It was worth the effort as it works. I’ve reduced from taking daily to weekly.
