A Tax on Fashion?
In the News
good idea to society from being s wasteful? or just another way to squeeze money out of people?
I think it is a good idea but there should also be more ways for people to recycle clothes. I know when I was young there were clothes banks and we gave our clothes to the charity shops. Is there a way for clothes to be reused, either as new clothes or as something else? I don't buy new clothes unless I need them.
A lot of my sons clothes are second hand. His 0-3 months clothes will be going to the local neo natal unit that looked after him so other babies can get the benefit.
I agree, definitely for kids clothing, as they outgrow them so quickly, and they are often still in great condition to be passed not someone else who needs them
hspexy exactly! I was given clothes from a friend that belonged to her son and some still had the tags on as people had bought her loads of stuff!
Saved me a lot of money and there is still loads of wear in them!
I am torn on this as we are already taxed to the eyeballs on alcohol and cigarettes (neither of which I use), petrol, sugar tax, and practically everything else we buy or use is subject to VAT, including adult clothing. In effect we pay tax twice or more on life! What with income tax, council tax, stamp duty, it is never ending.
If they want to save the environment, compel every clothes retailer to take second hand clothing and give the customer a small discount on their new item. They can recoup the cost by government incentive but it seems to me politicians only want to gather taxes not give back!
