when making tea is it milk in first or last? sure I read somewhere it used to be milk in first because it saved the bone china from shattering. However in the world of mugs whats the right way....?
Serving Tea
The tea is poured by the hostess or a nominated pourer. If leaf tea is served, a tea strainer is used.
The tea is handed out one cup at a time after being poured, rather than pouring a few and handing them out in one go.
The milk jug and sugar is passed around and each person adds their own.
Use the teaspoon to stir the tea (without clinking) and then place it back on the saucer. Cups are held by the handle – being careful not to raise the little finger – and placed back on the saucer between sips.
Saucers remain on the table and are never raised when the cup is lifted up.
Away from the table, for example in an armchair, the cup and saucer are raised together and then put down between sips.

Thank you. For years I assumed I was doing it right but today you’ve taught me something new. Never too old to learn! I am a stickler for those taking sugar to let them do it themselves, some have a small level spoonful and other heaps.
Johnny eyeballkerry ahhhhhhh Ive found my people....all hail the pinkie salute
I'm not even a tea drinker but even I know that putting milk in first is wrong. The tea needs to brew in the hot water, then you add milk.
You have broken my brain with that single sentence, cant compute a day without tea. Even drink it when its sunny out- but then thats the 90s for you - anything went! hahahaha Ahhhh lets pray for sun thems were the days.
OneeyedRaven if it helps, I drink it occasionally, but it's pretty rare. I'm normally just a water drinker!
Milk was once upon a time put in first so the best china did not break under through rapid expansion of contact with hot liquid. Now society should add milk last as we most often brew in the mug. If you add milk first then you probably like weak and nasty tea.
Always milk last for me. I like a stronger brew, so the temperature needs to be hot to get the tea leaves brewing. Milk will just weaken the tea
I prefer to put the milk in last. Although, at home I normally drink tea without adding milk or sugar.
OneeyedRaven I mainly drink Earl Grey, Rooibos and Green Tea at home. I like the flavour of the tea, so don't feel a need to add anything else.
milk last as you don't know how much milk to add until you see the right tea colour that you like as each time i have a cup/mug of tea the cup/mug is a different size so wouldn't work with milk first
Milk after hot water otherwise its too weak. I usually drink coffee though and putting milk first is supposed to stop you burning the coffee. Its actually nicer
I work in a cafe and if someone orders tea we give them hot water and a tea bag in a mug and a little pot of milk seperate for them to add. No one had asked for milk first.
i’m not a tea drinker, but I’ve always been led to believe for tea it’s milk last and for coffee it’s milk first.. I definitely notice the difference between coffee with the milk first and coffee with the milk afterwards when using instant coffee as the boiling water burns the granules if the milk doesn’t go in first...
Totally agree my friend likes coffee but not the bitter taste so I am always saying put milk in first and whenever I make her coffee she always says how nice it is- like the comment above stops the coffee scalding in a bad way
i do it both ways, best way is milk last but depending on how busy i am and not concentrating on something else like the kids etc i usually put milk 1st lol.
