Teenage Weddings

Other

I’ve been watching a series on you tube about teenagers getting married. How young is too young... ? (I’m talking over 16 yr old teenagers). I was married at 19.... widowed at 21..... never married again.... I’m now 48. I loved my husband and took my vows seriously.

I married at 17 had first child at 20, second at 22. Divorced at 36 which some today might consider a good innings. No matter how seriously you take your vows, if your spouse does not do the same it can end in tears. Who can predict the future of any relationship as most enter it thinking it will last.

My head says way too young, are they emotionally ready, can they support themselves financially etc but who can judge. I feel for you being widowed so young, I married at 31 and was widowed three years later, a short life together but filled with wonderful memories. Bad things can happen at any time so should we deny anyone happiness.

Hi Jamala. Before I comment I will preface with 'I know this does not apply to all as some youngsters are very silly and play at being married'. However, nearly all the long term marriages I know, were married quite young. It seems to me that if you are sensible, and as you say able to support yourself, youngsters can grow together and have no real baggage to bring to the relationship. The main problem always seems to be fidelity, wondering if the grass is greener, what have I missed out on. My own husband left me for a 21 year old and when the wedding was being arranged came round crying his eyes out at what a fool he had been, he was trapped, he still loved me etc. Needless to say it didn't last and he is now on his 4th marriage, maybe 5th since I last heard!

Conversely I have seen many successful 2nd, 3rd etc marriages that keep failing because of all the baggage, although some who were very unlucky first time may find their soulmate in their second marriage.

I think we would all agree that marriages are very complex institutions lol!!!
