Tesco to Cut Jobs

Sometimes though not often shame for the workers

Seems Tesco are going the low grade route for their smaller stores using parbaked bread like Convenience stores, service stations, Lidl's and Aldi etc. Such bread has much higher levels of fungi (yeast) because of the freezing process as well as many additional chemicals. It' garbage processed food with a short life once it's had its final bake but is much more profitable for the supermarket and has less waste for the store although often means more waste for the end customer as it goes stale more quickly. I only buy such bread if its heavily reduced. My local Coop often reduces it to very low money in the evening which is a short walk from me but unless you freeze it will be often be stale by the end of the next day especially if baguettes. I don't think many people realise but the pre-packaged bread nowadays coming from full bakeries is often the healthier bread to buy as its baked conventionally without extreme levels of yeast and lasts much longer unless of course you have a supermarket with a proper bakery like Asda, Morrisons and I guess in the future only larger Tesco supermarkets and even those supermarkets use parbaked for certain small speciality breads and other baked products but for most larger loaves they would use conventional baking. As ever its a race to the bottom to compete in price so higher quality supermarkets can compete with cheaper low grade supermarkets in costs. I'd say support your local independent bakery but sadly the prices of bread in some of those are astronomical so I guess the only option if you want value and quality for fresh baked bread is Morrisions, Asda and larger Tesco stores. Saying that I don't know if there are larger Lidl's and Aldi with proper bakeries so apologies if some of those have proper bakeries and not the low grade parbaked bread I see in such stores around here.

I buy from the bakery. My husband likes the Wheaton bread.

No as I rarely buy from their bakery as I don't like it.

I like Tesco Bakery bread / rolls etc, but never knew they were made in store, always thought they were just bake off items. Seems to be the trend with supermarkets now thou doing away with the fresh counters, my local Asda has just closed the Fish and Meat counters , the deli counter disappeared last year.

Not sure whether the constant expansion of Aldi & Lidl has anything to do with this as ( cost saving)obviously their stores have never had such counters, bad for staff thou any job loses is not good.

No, I don't particularly like their bakery either. There are far nicer (and better priced) choices to be made in Asda or Lidl. It's a sad blow for the workforce though.
