Tesco Half Price Sale - Irresponsible?

In the News

https://metro.co.uk/2020/05/06/tesco-branded-irresponsible-half-price-clothing-sale-lockdown-12660344/

some have slated Tesco for this, but will the sale really attract an influx of customers? Should they have waited till after the lockdown was lifted?

it makes no difference to me as I don’t buy clothes from them

I think that the problem with this is that people DO still need clothes and indeed other items. What is insignificant to one is essential to another. If you were just about to buy some clothes when the lockdown started then clothing is what you are thinking about and is what you want to buy.

It is all a matter of personal priorities.

There is also something to be said of ordering online (anything) because if we do then are we putting deliverers at risk or are we keeping the producers of the products in work? Devil if you do, devil if you don't...

All very true. I suppose with people being under lockdown means more complaints about everything and anything, criticising at every angle possible.

Tesco probably have a lot of stock to shift but unsure how any shop deals with trying on or returning clothes at the moment. That is the big issue. I'm sure there will be many offers in the coming weeks due to excess stock and I don't think Corona virus is going to disappear in the near future. How we shop may have to change.

Yes shopping won’t be the same. Most retailers have stated they won’t offer changing room services, so I suppose the returns policy also goes out the window. It may make people think more carefully about buying in the future

Big companies buy their seasonal stock far far in advance so tesco will be overstocked on summer clothing at the moment. The next cycle would be back to school then Halloween then Christmas. They need the space in stores for what's due next.

Yes, they also need to pay their suppliers, who obviously will need the money to stay afloat

I would normally be buying my sons clothes in bigger sizes in the sale if I was shopping in store. I personally think that they should go back to selling their clothes online during the pandemic as that would be safer. I don't think it will encourage more people to go. I would love to get clothes for my son at half price, but I won't be going into the shop to do it.

We could argue that half the posts in the deals section of this website are irresponsible if this is along with B&Q opening as if everybody going there was buying 'essential' items. I honestly don't think people will flock to Tesco for half price clothes but I may be wrong.

The clothes section was completely empty when I went in Tesco today. Let's hope that was a reflection of how it is elsewhere. Who needs new clothes now? 😄

People like me who are snacking too much and not getting enough exercise 😂 luckily I'm not at that stage yet, but don't feel lockdown has been healthy for me...

MeestairChrees I won't judge based on the fact I just came back from shopping and have already polished off half an Easter egg.

Dennab haha, I'd probably be the same. Still got stuff leftover from Christmas though, and chocolate deals from a while ago, so I'm not bothering with Easter eggs this year.

MeestairChrees You can't be that bad then! We've engulfed around 85% of a 60 quid Easter egg haul in three weeks. I will point out we only paid around £15 for them. On the flipside, working from home has encouraged me to get more exercise. It's all a bit backward at the moment.

Dennab well I got an insane Galaxy deal a while before lockdown and it means I've had quite a stash to work through which is why I still have stuff left! I can't do some of the exercise I used to, and my really a home workout video kind of person - nothing I can think of that I can really do at home.

I have no issue with this. If people are already visiting a Tesco store or shopping online for 'essentials' I can't see any problem with them adding some items of clothing. Most other fashion retailers have been selling online during the lockdown. They need to shift their stock.

Had a shop yesterday, was a bit of a queue, but managed to get a few bits and pieces for my daughter, for a good price.

They are a retailer, so they do what they want. They set themselves up to earn money, so I don't expect them to hold back. They might be profiting today, but a big business like theirs could go bankrupt if they don't keep on top of themselves

Very true. So many have collapsed in recent times, even before this pandemic, so they’ve always got to keep on top of things
