Thandie to Thandiwe Newton

Ask a Question

I read recently that Thandie has reverted to the original Zimbabwean spelling of her first name, Thandiwe.

Good on her, entirely her choice and a great actress. I’m not great at remembering names so I usually refer to her as the ‘bent copper’ actress in Line of Duty that lost her arm 🤦‍♀️

What do you think? Should she have reverted or stayed with Thandie?

HappyTravels entirely up to her I suppose. May be difficult for her audience to remember but as long as she maintains her acting as previously, don’t think it will be a problem.

It is quite strange that she chooses to change it back now, after she has found fame. Don't forget though that many 'stars' don't even have a name remotely resembling their actual name, but they usually stick to that the whole way through. Still, each to their own.

I think it is just posturing and making some sort of statement. Many celebs seem to revel in having names that are impossible for the majority to remember or pronounce.

Thandie is obviously a shortening of the original name so it is rather like Jenny asking to be known as Jennifer in future, despite being happy to be known as Jenny for many, many years.

Wow so she came to be known as Thandie after the film credits misspelt her name .. I do wonder what took her so long.. but good for her

Nadiaparveen never realised that’s how her name came about. She’s a good actress regardless. I liked her in Mission Impossible II, Crash and especially Line of Duty!

HappyTravels I liked her in the pursuit of happyness though her character role was only seen in the beginning

It’s not just the spelling, but the pronunciation and meaning of her name. She obviously feels more confident to assert herself to do this now - I’m sure back then, she never felt secure enough to correct people, especially the directors and producer, who have a lot of power
