'The Old Days' a Child's View

Other

My grandson and I were chatting and we put something in the microwave and I said that we didn't have them when I was his age. Of course this snowballed into all the other things he takes for granted: duvets, electric kettles, central heating, showers, DVD players, colour tv, ipads and pods.

Even those younger than me, what do your kids, grandkids have that you didn't?

My kids have their own private helicopter with their own pilot who takes them anywhere as they wish. They don't know how lucky they are. I had to make do with slow as molasses car transport in the 50s and 60s. Cars are so old fashioned and inefficient these days. Air transport is faster and more efficient over longer distances.

Internet, wi-fi, cordless things,

We also did not have a lots of products in the 80`s. My country was under Russia, so it was communism and nothing could enter from the West.

I had a Russian penfriend in the 80s and often sent parcels with tiny luxuries that were every day items to me. Biros, sweets, paracetamol, tights etc. One year I sent her little girl a Barbie doll with lots of outfits and her gratitude was heartbreaking. She said her daughter's face at Christmas was something she would never forget and whilst I was happy i was also sad that such a small thing meant so much.

Mobile phones, they think it's hilarious phone boxes used to take 2p pieces! Apart from the obvious wifi etc I'd say central heating, now almost every home has it yet coal fires were the norm not that long ago.

On gosh yes the good old phone box, trudging out in all weather to make a call. My parents did not have a phone until well into the 70s. I can see landline phones becoming obselete, I do not have one even now.
