How Did Things Start
Other
So, I am going to try again as earlier this subject disappeared into a black hole after flashing moderation. I got no notification nor a reply to my query about it.
You can judge for yourself lol.
I was wondering how mankind realised that certain things came about.......
Who realised that churning milk would turn it into cheese
Or fiddle with it a bit more to get cheese
Or which herbs cured or killed
Or any myriad of other things.......
And yet......they didn't invent the fork until the middle ages!
I guess I shouldn't have put the word 'cr*zy in my earlier post!
Interesting topic well i did have to use google on this one.
Cheese may have been discovered accidentally by the practice of storing milk in containers made from the stomachs of animals. Rennet, an enzyme found in a stomach of ruminant animals, would cause the milk to coagulate, separating into curds and whey.
Oh well done Ann, so I suppose most things came about accidentally! I daresay a few people died before they realised that hemlock and deadly nightshade were.......well deadly lol.
🕸🕷 lilyflower I wonder who decided to rub bits of flint together and start a fire lol.
It always amazes me why we eat some of the foods we eat.
Who was the first person to see a snail and think "I bet that would taste nice deshelled and dripping in garlic butter"
By that rational, somebody must have tried cooking slugs in a similar way.
And there's a certain kind of coffee bean that has "passed through" a Civet Cat.
What exactly was somebody looking for when they found out that makes a tasty cup of coffee!
Exactly the things I think of and why I started this thread. I mean who knew some perfume made from whales poo!
Whale poop, known as ambergris, often costs more than silver and in some instances it can cost 30x the amount of silver. It’s an essential ingredient in the making of perfume/cologne. Chances are, if you’ve ever sprayed on a fine fragrance then you’ve doused yourself in whale ****.
I find it quite amazing that man quickly learned how to make alcohol, I mean, someone woke up one day and thought I am going to make a complicated still where an awful tasting liquid will emerge, which, when imbibed will make people do stupid things!!!
I reckon that came about by eating rotten fruit (grapes /apples etc ) or I could be wrong .
Golfforall No you are probably right, when you really look into these things there is usually a plausible explanation.
But how about the one who thought of wrapping dried leaves in paper, sticking one end in your mouth and lighting the other. It is not exactly pleasant and you don't get hooked after one so why would anyone bother to do it again!!!
Lynibis Think we can blame the American Indians for that and Walter Raleigh for importing it .
The way middle age housing and palaces smelt in those days (due to very basic if any sanitation ) they probably used it as an air freshener !
Very interesting..
Like did these ideas just pop in to their mind..
I guess some of them were brought about by the need for it and some by sheer curiosity
so many other things have came across unintentionally like discovering penicillin kills bacteria.. even certain recipes came by 'accident'
Even things we take for granted puzzle me. Who thought of mixing yeast with flour, proving it, and then baking it to make bread lol.
