Your Thoughts on Plan to Increase Lorry Drivers Working Hours amid Shortages

Ask a Question

I was really surprised about this plan, if I remember correctly the rules to restrict the number of hours someone could drive were introduced for safety reasons. Do you think this will increase the number of accidents due to falling asleep behind the wheel.

Am I the only one who thinks this plan is crazy ?

There is a shortage of both lorry and bus drivers in the UK , they have made it virtually impossible to drive on the roads for a living a combination of roadworks, delays speed enforcement, reduced speed limits , traffic cameras etc have all had an effect on professional drivers which is a nightmare when you are restricted to strict driving regulations and face penalties/fines for breaching them not to mention the other rude and inconsiderate drivers on the roads . There is also the very unpopular Drivers CPC that has to be completed every 5 years to maintain their licences this is basically a classroom based training course and has proved very unpopular in the industry , as well as various other courses and ensuring all relevant paperwork is order . Hours are long and irregular , and at all times of the day/night in all weather conditions , for mostly poor levels of pay, is there any wonder there is a shortage.

Mango4 agree my OH have both licenses and always goes back to be a hgv technician the wages are awful. But if a company can pay £350 a shift for agency drivers then am sure if they employed drivers at this rate they be in and dated with people but no night shift in wales 140.

Yes i think this is crazy, as if the driver has over done his/hers hours this will impact on there ability to concentrate. Maybe if they reduced the cost of doing the HGV testing they might get more drivers applying to do it

I was watching a police documentary only yesterday and the number of motorway accidents involving lorries was staggering. There’s no way lorry drivers working hours should be increased!

People that don’t drive huge vehicles don’t have to take a break. I understand that the lorry is huge. But I feel that others should be needing a break too who also do professional driving. But that’s not the case.

I think that they still should have breaks.

Some companies have offered free training as long as you stay with them for a certain amount of time. They have been doing this for years. I think that the pay is low that’s why people haven’t jumped to it.

However some people may be out of jobs now & they may take up driving because they need money.

I think a lot of driving jobs have been created due to this pandemic. More home deliveries etc.

Is this lorry driver shortage just another story to panic us?

I think that wages need to be increased for haulage drivers - some are on little more than minimum wage. This may encourage more people to apply for jobs that have been left vacant by migrant workers who returned home after Brexit.

Extending working hours is potentially dangerous.
