Throws and Cushions on Beds?

Ask a Question

I'm thinking about how best to stage the house for selling. I'm wondering what people's opinions are on having throws and cushions on beds? I like the idea of them for our single beds as you only need one cushion per bed. It's the double bed I'm not sure about. All the ones I have seen seem to have 4 cushions on them. I think that is a bit much and that 2 would be enough. I want it to look nice and appeal to people so I'm not sure if I should get throws and cushions or just leave them without.

I'm also wondering if I should get cushions for the sofas? We don't currently have them as our dog would knock them off or sleep on them, but wondering if they would make it look more welcoming?

What do you think of this?

I agree throws and pillows look good on a single bed but if you aren't sure about the double beds do what feels right. Do not go out of your way to buy throws and pillows and my dogs do the same with pillows when theyre not laying on them.

chelseaturpin I have throws in the house, I was going to use them on the double bed to see what it looked like and then buy the right colour if I liked it. I will definitely put them on the single beds. It's the cushions on the double that I'm unsure of. I have looked at some photos on insta etc and some of them have 6 or 8 cushions and I just think it's too much!

I have some amazon vouchers that I'm going to use to get stuff for the house so the throws would be bought with those.

Our dog thought the pillows were mini beds for her when she was a puppy and she never grew out of it so after she had ruined them I never got new ones!

Our house is ready to move into, I just want to make it look nice.

Generally the less clutter the better (Glad I'm not selling mine !) . The barer a house is the bigger the rooms appear . After all people are looking to buy the house , not your taste in soft furnishings .

Golfforall yes I totally agree with that, my house is clutter free already and whilst they don't care about your taste in soft furnishings, staging a house a certain way makes it more inviting. Plus that isn't considered clutter. We aren't selling yet as my husband needs to get a new job first but I want to be prepared for when we are.

I agree with Golfforall too keep it minimal a buyer is not coming to look at your bed or sofa. As they say less is more. Don’t go spending to much you may not need the stuff in new house

Ann1984 our house is very minimal as it is. Whilst they are not coming to look at the sofa etc it does help if your house is staged a certain way. I will be using my amazon vouchers from surveys to pay for it and I will use them in the new house.

I love looking at houses even tho not moving. So if you don’t already, look on right move app and see what’s the latest sold stc and that would tell you what’s going on in your area and the likes of decor etc.

lynneh I have already done that. We live in the fastest growing council area in Scotland and are at the more affordable end of the market for the area, so houses don't hang around, especially the part we are in. The ones I've seen have the houses staged in a certain way and some definitely look nicer than others.

Ann1984 three kids and three cats here. Not happening anytime soon and they are passed the toy stage. It ends up gadgets and games and make up and clothes oh and several dishes. 😂😂

Ann1984 lynneh I don't like open plan houses! I have to have a wall between the kitchen and living room. Even before I had my son I was not a fan of open plan. I'm looking forward to decorating the new house but if I can use some of the stuff we alreaduy have then even better.

When we put out house on the market, I put cushions and a throw on the bed. If it's staged as a child's room I think having a cuddly toy on the bed looks nice. I used to stage my home before each viewing.

Good Luck hope it sells soon

beccatavender I'm planning to stage it before each viewing and put the items in the cupboard afterwards.

It won't be going on the market till my husband gets a new job but I want to be prepared.

MrsCraig If your living room is very neutral how about a few cushions in mixed bright colours? My first sofa was dark brown on beige carpet and beige walls with no opportunity of changing, added some mixed colours and shaped cushions (bought from charity shop £1 each) and instantly lifted the room. I'd just make sure the beds were really well made and smooth.

lilyflower our living room is chocolate brown and cream. I like the idea of colour from the cushions but not sure what colours to go for.

MrsCraig Any? If you don't normally have cushions and they are only for 'dressing' have a mix of whatever is available and affordable then only bring them out for viewings and afterwards the dog can have them 🙂

lilyflower whatever I buy will be used for staging and put in the cupboard afterwards but I don't want a colour that might clash, but I suppose brown and cream are pretty neutral so it wouldn't really matter.

When we sold our house the estate agent said declutter and then wait a day or two and declutter again. I think the tidyness and clean smell sells quicker than cushions.

Auntielettie I've already decluttered 3 times, I haven't got anything else that can be gotten rid of.

Yes the house being clean and tidy and smelling nice is important but staging does help. I'm not saying a cushion will help it sell faster, I'm saying that staging it in a certain way, which involves cushions, makes a difference.

I've viewed a lot of houses before and those that were staged in a certain way felt more welcoming and I could imagine living there.

I have a throw on the bottom of the bed and two upright cushions leaning on the pillows, all the same colour. It’s very neat and tidy. If you put lots of cushions then you have to stack somewhere when using your bed, two sit easily on a chair.

Pjran yes I was thinking a throw and 2 cushions in the same colour as the bedding would be enough and easy to store
